New York Islanders versus Washington Capitals

In a match up of teams on the opposite sides of the standings, the Capitals are first in the Metropolitan and the Islanders are next to last. Washington holds a commanding +20 to +4 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator and “average down” versus “dead” on the Team Strength Oscillator. The teams have split the series so far,  ...

NHL Predictions: March 8

With the NHL season heading into the home stretch, teams jockey for position for the post season. Here’s what is on tap for March 8.  Note that standings and records are form games played through March 6.

Philadelphia Flyers versus Boston Bruins

Boston comes in second in the Atlantic Division, while the Flyers are third in the Metropolitan, two points out of first. Boston won the last meeting 3-0 as a road underdog. They hold a +28 to +21 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator and +11.17 to +8.84 on the Team Strength Oscillator. Boston has won three straight, while  ...

NHL Predictions: March 2

With teams starting to jockey for position in the playoff race, check out what is in store for Friday, March 2.

Buffalo Sabres versus Florida Panthers

Buffalo enters with the worst record in the Eastern Conference and the Panthers are battling the Red Wings for third in the Atlantic Division. The Sabres are “ice cold down” and 0 on the Power Ranking Indicator. Florida is “average down” on the Team Strength Oscillator and +12 on the Power Ranking Indicator. They also have a 2-0 season series lead and should have no problems disposing of the Sabres in this game.

Detroit  ...

NHL Predictions: February 22

With the playoff push in full force, there are some good match ups in store. Here’s a rundown of those games.

New York Islanders versus Toronto Maple Leafs

The Islanders are near the bottom in the Metropolitan Division, while the Maple Leafs battle the Bruins and Lightning for the top of the Atlantic Division. Toronto holds large advantages on the oscillators, at +27 to +10 on the Power Ranking Indicator, and “burning hot down” versus “ice cold up” on the Team Strength Oscillator. Toronto won in a 5-0 blowout on January 31 as the home favorite. That trend will continue,  ...

NHL Predictions: February 15

With the NHL playoff races tightening, there are several good games on tap for Thursday. Let’s take a look at what is in store.

Carolina Hurricanes versus New Jersey Devils

The two teams are battling in the middle of the pack in the Metropolitan Division. They are dead even on the Power Ranking Indicator at +13, while the Hurricanes are “average” versus “average down” on the Team Strength Oscillator. New Jersey had lost four straight through Monday, but are solid at home. I give the Devils a slight advantage and look for them to get back on track in this  ...

NHL Predictions: February 9

Detroit Red Wings versus New York Islanders

Both clubs are battling in the middle of their divisions and are nearly even (+12 to +11 edge to the Islanders) on the Power Ranking Indicator.  Detroit is “burning hot” while the Islanders are “average”, although both teams are playing nearly .500 hockey over the past ten game. Detroit won the first one as a road dog. I think New York wont lose two in a row to the Red Wings at home, taking this one by a goal.

Los Angeles Kings versus Florida Panthers

The Kings look to push towards the top  ...

NHL predictions: February 2nd

It’s a short list of games in the NHL on Friday night February 2nd. Reigning NHL Stanley Cup winners, the Pittsburgh Penguins, will be on the ice. Surprise package expansion team Vegas Golden Knights will also play. The NHL regular season is nearly two-thirds of the way finished. There is still plenty of space for teams to jockey as the NHL Playoffs loom.

NHL Predictions: February 2nd

Washington Capitals vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

The two of the best teams in the Metropolitan Division take to the ice on Friday night. Both hockey clubs have been playing well over their last  ...

NHL Predictions: January 25

Nashville Predators versus New Jersey Devils

Both teams are battling for the top spot in their respective divisions, however are moving in opposite directions. Nashville is “burning hot” while the Devils are “ice cold down”. There is a big advantage for the Predators on the Power Ranking Indicator at +30 to +16. On the flip side, the Devils have won the last two meeting between the teams. Nashville is tied for seventh in Team Volatility and have been solid on the road. While New Jersey is likely a home favorite, I’m going with the hot hand and picking Nashville.

Minnesota  ...

NHL Picks: December 29

Buffalo Sabres versus New Jersey Devils

The Sabres come in with the worst record in the Eastern Conference, while the Devils are clinging to the lead in the Metropolitan division. New Jersey won easily as a road underdog on October 9 and hold a huge +27 to +2 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator. Buffalo is first in Team Volatility, which is another strong indicator to pick the Devils. Look for New Jersey to roll in a sleeper of a game.

Philadelphia Flyers versus Tampa Bay Lightning

Tampa Bay has the best record in the NHL and the Flyers are  ...

Are the Vegas Golden Knights a real contender for the NHL Stanley Cup?

The NHL is about to re-start after the Christmas break, and odds makers have had a serious look at possible Stanley Cup winners. As of December 26, Vegas is tied for second favorite in odds to lift the NHL Stanley Cup. Few would have believed an expansion team would have such great futures odds. However, the Golden Knights haven’t been your typical expansion franchise.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are currently odds on favorites to win the NHL Stanley Cup. Listed at +600, the Lightning’s odds reflect their fantastic performance through 35 games. Tampa Bay has the most points  ...

NHL picks: December 16

Edmonton Oilers versus Minnesota Wild

Edmonton is near the bottom in the Pacific Division while Minnesota is in the middle of the pack in the Central Division. However, both teams are playing relatively well lately, on an upward trend on the Power Ranking Indicator (Minnesota holding a +17 to +7 advantage). Edmonton won two of three last season between the teams, but the Wild are 9-3-2 at home. I see them winning this one without too much difficulty.

New York Rangers versus Boston Bruins

The Rangers are battling in the tight Metropolitan Division and the Bruins are third in the  ...

NHL Picks: Friday, December 1

Pittsburgh Penguins versus Buffalo Sabres

The Penguins won the first meeting between the teams as a home favorite on November 14. Pittsburgh has an “average” status versus “dead up” for Buffalo on the Team Strength Oscillator. Pittsburgh also holds a very decided advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator, +19 to 0.  Tied for first in Team Volatility, the Penguins are a road favorite and should win this game without too much difficulty.

Carolina Hurricanes versus New York Rangers

Both teams are hovering near the bottom of the Metropolitan division with Carolina winning the last meeting between the teams as road  ...
