NHL Predictions: January 25

Nashville Predators versus New Jersey Devils

Both teams are battling for the top spot in their respective divisions, however are moving in opposite directions. Nashville is “burning hot” while the Devils are “ice cold down”. There is a big advantage for the Predators on the Power Ranking Indicator at +30 to +16. On the flip side, the Devils have won the last two meeting between the teams. Nashville is tied for seventh in Team Volatility and have been solid on the road. While New Jersey is likely a home favorite, I’m going with the hot hand and picking Nashville.

Minnesota Wild versus Pittsburgh Penguins

The Wild and the Penguins are both trying to battle back into contention in their divisions. Minnesota holds a +21 to +17 edge on the Power Ranking Indicator, but Pittsburgh is “burning hot” versus “average” on the Team Strength Oscillator. Minnesota won the last meeting as a home underdog on October 28. What could play in the Penguins favor is that they are likely a home favorite and tied for fifth in Team Volatility. I see Pittsburgh coming away with a close win in this one.

Chicago Blackhawks versus Detroit Red Wings

Chicago is last in the Central Division while Detroit is in the middle of the pack in the Atlantic Division. Chicago is “average down” versus “ice cold down” on the Team Strength Oscillator and holds a +9 to +3 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator. However, Detroit took the first meeting between the teams this season on January 14 by a 4-0 score as a road underdog. Playing a hunch again in this one, I see the Red Wings holding on to a win in a close game, perhaps even an overtime decision.

Colorado Avalanche versus Dallas Stars

The teams have nearly identical records, battling in the Central Division. Coloardo, however, is “burning hot” on the Team Strength Oscillator, versus “average” for Dallas. This difference is due to Colorado’s current 10-0 run. The Avalanche hold a +28 to +22 edge in the Power Ranking Indicator. Although Dallas is at home, it’s hard to pick against Colorado at this time. I will go with the hottest team in the NHL right now and see an Avalanche win by two goals.

Columbus Blue Jackets versus Arizona Coyotes

Columbus won the first meeting this season between these teams as a home favorite. They are “average down” on the Team Strength Oscillator versus “dead up” for the Coyotes. Arizona has the worst record in the NHL leading to a poor +2 on the Power Ranking Indicator. They are also second in Team Volatility and the Blue Jackets are seventh. This is all the more evidence to pick Columbus, who will win in a blowout.

New York Rangers versus San Jose Sharks

San Jose took the first game this season between the clubs as a road underdog. They hold a +20 to +10 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator and are “average up” versus “ice cold down” on the Team Strength Oscillator. The Sharks are near the top in the Pacific Division while the Rangers are trying to tread water in the Metropolitan. New York will be an underdog and they are tied for tenth in Team Volatility, leaning the pick even further towards the Sharks. San Jose should win this one without much difficulty.
