The XFL returned with a bang for Week 1 after the spring football league’s relaunch on February 8. The XFL, which is owned by WWE CEO Vince McMahon, originally debuted in 2001. However, after a season filled with criticism for the on-field product and financial losses mounting, it was shuttered after just one year.

Nearly 20 years later, the XFL kicked off for a second time with the first weekend being a major success. Over 17,000 fans turned out for the New York Guardians/Tampa Bay Vipers game at MetLife Stadium. The league also saw its four games from Week 1 average 3.12 million television viewers. Three of the weekend’s four games saw better ratings than all of the weekend’s NBA and college basketball games.

The XFL has a number of betting partners and major sportsbooks have odds posted for XFL betting. But before you begin betting on XFL games, there are a few things to consider.

Game Lines

The teams and players in the XFL are unknown quantities. The season is in its early stages, so it is difficult to get a real idea of just how good these teams are in the XFL. Unlike in the NFL where we already have a solid idea of the quality of the teams and players, we do not in the XFL. It may take half the season to get a clear picture of which teams should be the favorite each week. Be cautious when betting on the games. You may want to make an in-game bet or wager on the over/under. Moneyline bets could be a mistake until you know just how good a team is. Conversely, with sportsbooks not knowing much about each team, you could make some excellent profits on XFL betting with wise moneyline bets.

The Players

The original XFL was made up of has-beens, never will bes, and few stars. The product on the field wasn’t great and that turned off football fans. The rebooted XFL has far better players courtesy of the improved development of college football over the last 20 years. The league’s top players currently are ex-Steeler quarterback Laundry Jones (Dallas Renegades), ex-Raider Matt McGloin (New York Guardians), and ex-Panther Rashad Ross (DC Defenders). A lot of the players that make up the league are former NFL player and there is a lot of talent around the XFL this time around.

The Rules

So, how does the XFL differentiate itself from the NFL? It adds some interesting rule changes to speed up the game, add excitement, and make it safer. The league’s kickoff change has made it possible for returns for touchdowns more likely. The points after a touchdown are also designed to make games higher scoring and potentially to make games closer down the stretch. Teams are not allowed to kick extra points. Instead, teams have to run an offensive play that can either be from the two-, five-, or 10-yard line. The after points are worth one, two, and three points, respectively. Games can be close due to this and high scoring.

XFL betting can be profitable but don’t jump into it without doing our homework.
