It’s another round of the competition, and it’s another ugly selection. The Florida Panthers are fresh off a very impressive win against the Pittsburgh Penguins, but they’re tired from a back to back and on the road in Buffalo. The Sabres are floundering this season, but they’re a physical team with excellent goaltending. Vegas and I agree that this is a coin flip.

I got a little bit of a thrill from watching the struggles you guys had to decide between two struggling teams in the last round, so I thought I’d do it again. The Panthers are playing better of late, but the Sabres, anchored in goaltending and physicality, should give them a game on home ice. Changes in the front office may have turned them around, but the Panthers appear to have more talent. This should be a good one.

NHL Picks: Contest Game – New York Islanders at Florida Panthers
I angered some people with my “two bad teams” comment in the picks game, and it looks like the Islanders responded as well. They’ve won four in a row, but they’re on the road against a streaky Panthers team.
Florida has a goalie who can win games for them in Tim Thomas. He’s a tough guy to win against, and the Panthers have been steady lately.

It’s funny, but I think the most difficult game to predict this Tuesday is between two pretty bad teams. The Panthers aren’t far removed from the playoffs and went out and got a pretty decent goalie in Tim Thomas, but they’ve struggled most of the year. The New York Islanders, in perhaps even more disappointing fashion, traded for Thomas Vanek only to sputter into the depths of the Metropolitan Division. My New Jersey Devils blew the lead in the third, and ultimately lost in overtime to the hated Philadelphia Flyers. A few of you were able to successfully predict the outcome of this challenging game. Congratulations!

NHL Picks Contest ($100 Prize) Round Eight: San Jose Sharks at Anaheim Ducks
Tuesday, December 31st
Christmas break is over and hockey is finally back. Another battle between California rivals gives us our eighth round of the contest. I think the Sharks are the better team, but they lack consistency on the road. The Ducks have been excellent this season, but they can be streaky. I think Anaheim versus San Jose is going to be a great one.
Who will win this game?
I know I say this every week, but it’s still anyone’s game. You can conceivably enter the competition right now and still win the whole thing. Not a single competitor has gotten past the four-win plateau. With a $50 prize for second place, this is going to be a fun run.

NHL Picks Contest Standings Update: Round Eight Postponed!!!
Sorry for the delay in this post. Hockey goes on a Christmas break from the 23rd to the 27th so there is no game to choose from on Tuesday. I don’t want to break up the routine we have going for the contest. Participation has been great and I want to stick to our Friday post for a Tuesday game system.
