NHL Picks: Ottawa Senators at Calgary Flames

NHL Picks: Ottawa Senators at Calgary Flames

Not a lot to choose from today, but here’s what I have for you guys tonight… This is a tremendously dangerous game, but it may also have the most value on the board as the computer indicates. The facts are these:

1. Senators have lost three of four and look sloppy out of the break

2. The Flames are a much better team at home and their recent slump has been on the road  ...

NHL Picks Contest: Vancouver Canucks at Phoenix Coyotes

NHL Picks Competition: Vancouver Canucks at Phoenix Coyotes

These two teams have completely fallen off the map, and true to our competition form, there really isn’t much of a signal on this game. The computer expects a close game, with an 83% chance of a game decided by one goal. That said, the underdog value parameter conflicts with the money line output odds. There’s just no reason to chase this game.

But what you should do, instead of betting your money on this one, is place a wager in our NHL Picks contest. Round 16 is underway, and this should be  ...

NHL Picks Contest: Round 15 Standings Update

NHL Picks Contest: Round 15 Standings Update

Maybe Olympic Silver Medal was too difficult a prediction to ask of you guys. Just five members got this one right! Still, it had to add a little excitement to the Olympics, right? We hit Canada for Gold, hedged with a USA team they met in the Semi Finals, so it was highly profitable for Z-Code. Let’s take a look at where we stand after 15 rounds of competition:

NHL Picks: Carolina Hurricanes at Buffalo Sabres

NHL Picks: Carolina Hurricanes at Buffalo Sabres

NHL hockey is back! The Olympic break is over and we got the Canadian gold medal right. It’s always good to make profits when your sport is on a break. That said, we did pretty good with our new addition, NCAA basketball, and with the NBA.

Here, we have a weak signal on the only game on the board. The Carolina Hurricanes have been a confusing team this year, while the Buffalo Sabres have been horrible (but consistently horrible). There’s some volatility here that the algorithm doesn’t like, but there’s also that happy familiarity  ...

Canada Wins Olympic Gold: Sochi Olympics 2014

Canada Wins Olympic Gold: Sochi Olympics 2014

Congratulations to Canada on their dominant win in the Gold Medal Game. Carey Price got hot at the right time, shutting down two of the best teams in the Olympics. The Canadian defensive pairings lived up to the hype and played incredibly well all tournament. Together, they made for dominant wins when the deepest offense in the tournament finally clicked.

We nailed this one, and our hedge with the US seemed to be the way to go. Getting Canada as underdogs with high value before they advanced to this game at -200 was a winning strategy. With Russia falling apart and Sweden suffering too many injuries to compete, we got this tournament right. Although the US failed to get up for the bronze medal after a disappointing loss to Canada, I still think we had the two best teams hedged at great value.

Get ready for NHL to return on Tuesday. We’re having  ...

2014 Olympic Hockey Predictions: Who Will Win Gold in Sochi? Canada, USA, Russia

2014 Sochi Olympics Predictions: Who Will Win Gold in Sochi?

As pool play rounds out, we know who the best teams in the tournament are. Here are my summaries of the top three teams who I think have the best chance to win Gold and why, and then ultimately a prediction of how things will go.

1. Canada: How can you bet against the Canadian Olympic Team? Their third line is better than most first lines in this tournament, except maybe for Russia, and they have the best defensive depth in the tournament. If there’s a weakness to this team it has to be in net. I question whether the combination of Luongo and Price can deliver a gold medal, both have a history of choking in big games. Yes, Luongo won gold last Olympics, but he also allowed the tying goal at the close of regulation. The point? They’re very beatable. They were +150 if you acted early enough,  ...

NHL Picks: Colorado Avalanche at New York Islanders, Ducks over Preds

NHL Picks: Colorado Avalanche at New York Islanders AND Anaheim Ducks at Nashville Predators

Two picks for you guys today. Hopefully everyone else is having as good a week as we are.

First, the Ducks and Preds. This is a tricky game, but I think it’s the most lucrative on the board for Thursday. The Anaheim Ducks have been one of the best teams in the NHL this year, surprising many. Unfortunately, however, they’re on a bit of a downswing and this game is dangerous as a result.

The Preds have had excellent goaltending this month and it has led  ...

NHL Picks Contest Standings Update: Round 13 – Avs Rangers

NHL Picks Contest: Round 13 – Avs Rangers

After the Colorado Avalanche fell flat against the New York Rangers, Pat O’Reilley is one win away from taking it all and this competition very suddenly becomes all about strategy. Remember, $100 to the first place participant and $50 to second place. Anything can happen in the final weeks. Good luck!

NHL Picks: Colorado Avalanche at New York Rangers, Contest Game

NHL Picks Contest Round 12: Colorado Avalanche at New York Rangers

As always, to participate in our contest, please simply comment on the NHL Contest post from earlier in the week on our Facebook page.

I like the Avs here. I recognize that they’re on a back to back and a little tired, but I think they can give the Rangers a game. After a thrilling comeback, I think the Avalanche have some momentum against an overly-rested Rangers team with mediocre goaltending. I think the West is this much better than the east, particularly the Met.

NHL Picks Contest: Colorado Avalanche at New York Rangers

NHL Picks Contest Round 13: Colorado Avalanche at New York Rangers, Tuesday, February 4th

The New York Rangers have been inconsistent this year, but they’re turning it on with two Stadium Series wins. Henrik Lundqvist seems to have found his stride again, but against a speedy Colorado Avalanche team this is a tough one. Colorado has depth and skating, and they pose a difficult matchup for the Rangers defense – not the mention the superiority of the west as a whole…

Who ya got? Simply comment on our Facebook post pinned to the top of the page to participate. Remember, second place gets $50 and first place gets $100.
