When do the 2023 MLB Playoffs start?
The MLB regular season ends on Sunday, October 1 and the playoffs begin just two days later. The playoffs will unfold from there. The tentative date for World Series Game 7 is Saturday, November 4. These dates could be altered due to weather.
MLB 2023 Playoff format
The number of Wild Card teams was increased to three last season. There are now six playoff places for each league.
The two best division winners from each league will receive a bye in the Wild Card Round. The Divison winner with the worst record of the three will play in the Wild Card Round along with the three Wild Cards.
The third-best division winner will face the lowest-seeded Wild Card, while the two remaining teams will play each other. The Wild Card Round is a best-of-five series.
The League Division Series (LDS) comes next. The top-seeded team in each league will face the winner of the No 4 and No 5 seed match-up. The No 2 seeded team will play the No 3 or No 6 seeds. The LDS is a best-of-five series.
Once the first two rounds are out of the way, the playoffs move to best of seven. Gone are the days of the MLB All-Star Game deciding home-field advantage in the World Series. Instead, the team with the best overall record will receive home-field advantage.
