FA Cup fourth round picks Jan 22-24: Will we see more giant killings in the cup?

The FA Cup fourth round kicks off this weekend, January 22 through 24 with teams looking to take another step in the cup tournament. The third round had plenty of excitement and a few shocks. It also had several correct picks that we brought to you (including a draw between Fulham and Queens Park Rangers).

Now, the FA Cup fourth round is ready to kick off this Friday with a match between Premier League team Wolverhampton Wanderers and League One Shrewsbury Town.

According to the latest odds, Manchester City are favorites to win the FA Cup at odds of +250. The next in line according to leading sportsbooks are:

  • Chelsea +600
  • Tottenham Hotspur +700
  • Liverpool +800
  • Manchester United +1200
  • Arsenal +1200

FA Cup fourth round

Chorley vs. Wolverhampton Wanderers (Friday, Jan 22)

Non-League club Chorley FC upset Championship club Derby County in the third round. While it was an upset, Derby County were missing all first-team players due to positive COVID-19 tests. Wolverhampton Wanderers will not be as easily pushed over, despite being on a poor run of form in the Premier League. Wolves have lost back-to-back matches in the Premier League, yet that shouldn’t matter. Manager Nuno Espirito Santo’s team are head and shoulders better than Chorley. Their players are internationals while Chorley’s are part-time players. Without fans in attendance, Wolves certainly have the upper hand as Chorley will not be buoyed on by fans.

While the ZCode System Soccer Buddy has the match set for a 1-1 draw, I cannot get behind that result. Wolverhampton Wanderers should score and I don’t believe they will concede a goal.

Winner: Wolverhampton Wanderers

Brighton vs. Blackpool (Saturday, Jan 23)

Premier League team Brighton host League One club Blackpool on Saturday in a game that could see an upset. Brighton, on paper, should win as they are the “better team”. However, Brighton are in a relegation fight in the Premier League and a run in the FA Cup would add unneeded matches and take away focus from relegation survival. Brighton needed penalties to defeat League Two New Newport County in the third round.

Blackpool defeated Premier League club West Brom in the FA Cup third round. With Brighton being very close to West Brom in the Premier League table, I believe Blackpool could win this again — although it could take extra-time and penalties. Once again I’m going to go against the Soccer Buddy app. I think this could be a Blackpool win or draw with the Tangerines progressing to the next round.

Result: Blackpool win or draw

Sheffield United vs. Plymouth Argyle (Saturday, Jan 23)

Premier League team Sheffield United host League One club Plymouth Argyle on Saturday at Bramall Lane. The Blades should fancy their chances of getting a result and moving onto the next round. Chris Wilder’s team have struggled in the Premier League this season but should keep going in the cup against a lower league side. Sheffield United defeated Bristol Rovers in the third round. While Plymouth Argyle defeated Championship team Huddersfield Town in the previous round, the FA Cup fourth round should be a step too far.

Result: Sheffield United to win
