In the past three years we’ve gotten a total of two series wrong in the first round. While our brackets have tended to fade as the NHL playoffs go on, first round matchups have been something of a specialty for me with Z-Code. That said, I look at this first round as a bunch of volatile, unpredictable matchups. We’ll do this bracket for fun because it’s become something of a tradition, but I won’t be betting every series line anymore — for the first time since college.

NHL Picks: New Jersey Devils at Florida Panthers

The best hockey game I’ve ever seen in person was the double-overtime thriller in Florida during the Devils’ most recent Stanley Cup run. Martin Brodeur stood on his head as the Florida Panthers dominated overtime following a late goal to tie it all up. Adam Henrique, who could barely skate his legs were so tried, fired a shot from deep in the slot and the New Jersey Devils advanced from the first round. It was the biggest bet I’ve ever made when combined with the series bets I had laid down.

For how important this game is to the LA Kings, I’m amazed at how much value there is in the line. The Kings did just fall to the Canucks in overtime and then again to the Edmonton Oilers, and I guess the Calgary Flames have won four of five. Sure, momentum is not on their side – but this is a team of proven winners that can overcome fatigue and move into a tie with the Flames for last place with one to play. The Boston Red Sox lineup is loaded, the Philadelphia Phillies don’t have the pitching to contain them, and even if they did I don’t think they could keep up offensively. Rick Porcello might be something of a liability, but there’s so much value in this line it’s difficult to stay away. NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship: Wisconsin Vs Duke

I like Duke. I like Coach K. I like this team. I love that they’ve covered and won us a lot of money all tournament. I feel this weird sense of loyalty to them that I don’t really feel toward the Wisconsin Badgers. Still, I think Wisconsin is going to win an epic NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship to close out March Madness.

Wisconsin appears to be the better team. My only worry about the Badgers is that they have an incredibly difficult task to get back up for this game. Wisconsin was waiting a  ...

2015 National League MLB Preview: Washington Nationals Will Dominate

It’s opening night and one of the best rivalries in baseball history takes center stage as a revamped Chicago Cubs team hosts perennial favorites in the St. Louis Cardinals.   I couldn’t be more excited. While we don’t have a bet on the first game of the year, it’s a good time to finish up our MLB preseason predictions with our 2015 National League preview.

It’s not so much that the Washington Nationals are the best team in baseball – which I think they might be – it’s more that they play in such a weak division. The Atlanta Braves are trying to rebuild, the New York Mets aren’t ready yet, the Philadelphia Phillies have been rebuilding for years, and the Miami Marlins are consistently mediocre. Washington should dominate the National League in 2015 by default.
