Are the New England Patriots still Super Bowl favorites?

NE PatsWeek 1 wasn’t supposed to end like it did for the New England Patriots. Hammered by the Kansas City Chiefs at home, 42-27, the Patriots’ dream of a perfect season went up in flames before it could even start.

New England was projected to win all 16 of its regular season games, and now that the team has lost, it seems like many are already giving up on the Pats. Week 1 saw Tom Brady and company greatly under perform, but the Patriots did play the AFC West’s winners from 2016. So, expecting the Chiefs to rollover was a bit naive.

The biggest question for NFL bettors that backed the Patriots to win the Super Bowl is, are they still favorites? The answer is yes, the Patriots are still the favorites, although the odds of winning the Super Bowl have indeed changed.

Entering week 1, the Patriots were at odds of +325 to win the Super Bowl. After one loss, those odds have changed to +450. A couple of strong wins, and the odds may revert back to the area they were previously. Some NFL bettors are ready to jump off the New England bandwagon, but keep in mind, the team lost the season opener in 2001, 2003 and 2014. Brady only led them to the Super Bowl wins in those years. So, losing game one isn’t as big a deal as some are making it out to be.

New England will travel to the Superdome to play New Orleans in week 2. If the Patriots get steamrolled by the Saints, then NFL bettors can begin to panic. However, the Patriots should be good against the team from the south. New Orleans lost in week 1 to Minnesota.

New England is the heavy favorite as shown by ZCode System’s line reversal tool for Sunday’s Superdome showdown. The team has declined slightly as favorite in the moneyline from -270 to -265, but that is far from bettors throwing their support behind New Orleans.

A big win against the Saints and most NFL bettors will forget about New England’s opening weekend loss. Unfortunately, plenty of fans and bettors seem to think New England is already done as the projection for the team to win all 16 regular season games was strong.

If not the Patriots, then who will win the Super Bowl?

According to sportsbooks and NFL Super Bowl odds, the next favorite to win the Super Bowl are the Green Bay Packers. Aaron Rodgers and company beat Seattle 17-9 in week 1, strengthening their case to be wagered on. At odds of +750, the Pack are a great value price.

What about the team that beat New England in week 1? The Chiefs are +1600 to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy in February. A great price for a team that is better than many believe. Kansas City won the AFC West last season over the much talked about Oakland Raiders, and was just edged out of the playoffs by the Steelers.
