WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON ESPORTS GENRES?

Not all esports games are born the same. There is a multitude of genres with their own characteristics and characteristics that make for a distinct gaming experience. Others are on the way out, and others are only past their height, so competitive games can be very different depending on the rules they follow. Below are few styles that you should be sure of:

1. MULTIPLAYER ONLINE BATTLE ARENA (MOBA)

Examples: Dota 2, League of Legends, Smite, Heroes of the Storm

Multiplayer battle arenas, such as League of Legends – created by Riot Games – and Heroes of the Storm by Activision Blizzard, are by far the most popular esports titles in the world. They take the standard RTS model and add in some of the roleplaying components by requiring every player to run a single game character and use it in a battle against another community of players.

It’s a lot easier, of course, than directing the flow of the entire battlefield, but that doesn’t make this genre easy. On the opposite, many MOBAs such as League of Legends and Heroes of the Storm come with a wide variety of unique characters and features, so pros need to have impressive levels of teamwork, game sense, and technical prowess.

2. FIRST-PERSON SHOOTER (FPS)

Examples: CS:GO, Call of Duty, Rainbow Six: Siege, Overwatch.

The gameplay method of simulating a firefight from a first-person perspective can seem easy on paper, but every FPS developer puts his own twist on it. It makes the first-person shooter one of the richest genres available, and you can illustrate hundreds of groups and types of FPS. Combine this with the keen target and split-second decision-making necessary to play these titles at a high level, and it’s obvious why first-person shooters play some of the best sports games in 2019.

3. FIGHTING GAMES

Examples: Street Fighter, Super Smash Bros, Tekken.

Fighters are old-school. Just as the name suggests, their gameplay revolves around two players (or more, like Super Smash Bros.) choosing unique characters and participating in close-to-quarter fights on the digital ring. With that, the competitive fighting game is turning into a whirlwind of punches, parries, and combination moves.

4. REAL-TIME STRATEGY (RTS)

Examples: StarCraft: Brood War, Warcraft III, StarCraft II.

Quite frankly: real-time tactics are a special breed these days. Those may be the most dynamic sports styles on the market. Much of it is due to its intrinsic complexity. RTS players assume the role of generals overseeing armies, erecting buildings and building up their economies. Doing all of these things at the same time needs a lot of macro-and micro-management, which is why RTS games are widely represented as chess on steroids. Unfortunately, this difficulty alienates casual gamers, making it hard for real-time tactics and other strategy games to keep up with the best sports games in terms of player numbers.

5. SPORTS GAMES

Examples: FIFA, Madden NFL, NBA 2K, Pro Evolution Soccer, Rocket League.

The essence of sports makes them ideal for competition, so it was only a matter of time before anyone tried to pass this magic to a computer screen. Join sports games – a genre that aims to imitate conventional sports as near as humanly as possible. Granted, there are a few noticeable variations, such as a quicker speed or a greater emphasis on individual ability rather than team play. Yet if you’ve ever tuned in to a soccer or basketball game show, you’ll have an easy time watching a sports game.

6. BATTLE ROYALE

Examples: PUBG, Fortnite, Apex Legends.

Battle Royale is the most recent addition to the catalogue of esports titles. Most of them adopt the same idea of a large number of players battling each other to survive on a map with a steadily diminishing playing area. The objective is to become the last player or – depending on the mode – a standing squad, so the battle of the Royal Games tends to turn into epic deathmatches. The only problem is that spectators will have a rough time keeping up with the action, because there are so many competitors doing their own stuff at the same time, but with the success of the battle royale games, it’s just a matter of time before we find a way to enjoy it even more.
