UEFA Nations League: International soccer tournament kicks off in June

The UEFA Nations League is one of the newest international soccer tournaments on the annual calendar. The competition replaces pointless exhibition matches with high-profile matches featuring the top teams in Europe.

This summer, Zcode System will have picks and predictions for the UEFA Nations League matches courtesy of the Soccer Buddy app. Before the tournament kicks off in June, let’s take a look at the tournament.

What is the UEFA Nations League?

The UEFA Nations League will kick off its third edition in June 2022. The tournament’s group stage will be played in June and September with the finals being played in June 2023.

The competition will feature three leagues of 16 teams each. A fourth league will consist of seven national teams. Leagues A, B, and C will feature 16 teams. The three leagues will be divided up into four groups with four teams each.

League D will have two groups. One group will feature three teams and the other will have four teams.

National teams will play each of their group opponents home and away. The games will take place in June and September. Four of the six matchdays will be played in June. UEFA will fit these four matchdays into June because the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be played in the autumn/winter.

League A’s four group winners will move on to the knockout finals in June 2023. The group winners of the other three Nations League’s leagues will be promoted for the edition of the competition.

The teams that finish fourth in Leagues A and B’s groups will be relegated to the league below. The teams that finish fourth in the groups in League C will play the play-outs in March 2024. The play-outs’ losing teams will move to League D.
