NHL Picks Contest ($100 Prize) Round Eight: San Jose Sharks at Anaheim Ducks

Christmas break is over and hockey is finally back. Another battle between California rivals gives us our eighth round of the contest. I think the Sharks are the better team, but they lack consistency on the road. The Ducks have been excellent this season, but they can be streaky. I think Anaheim versus San Jose is going to be a great one.

Who will win this game?

I know I say this every week, but it’s still anyone’s game. You can conceivably enter the competition right now and still win the whole thing. Not a single competitor has gotten past the four-win plateau. With a $50 prize for second place, this is going to be a fun run.

Sorry for the delay in this post. Hockey goes on a Christmas break from the 23rd to the 27th so there is no game to choose from on Tuesday. I don’t want to break up the routine we have going for the contest. Participation has been great and I want to stick to our Friday post for a Tuesday game system. We have, as a group, failed to hit more than half these contest game picks. As a result, I’d have to say I’m doing a pretty good job picking interesting and difficult games. Hopefully, Tuesday will be no exception.

Who will win between the Sharks and Blues on Tuesday, December 17th? Sharks are one of the best teams in hockey, but they sometimes struggle on the road. Will the Blues’ defensive system give them fits? Can St. Louis score?

Well, we can definitely pick ’em. It’s another coin flip game with coin flip odds for the sixth round of our competition. Two mediocre teams, which for me is more difficult to predict than two talented teams, do battle in Columbus. I’d say the Devils are the better team, but they’re on the road and I think that mitigates such an advantage. The Devils are coming off a big win, but the Blue Jackets have been more consistent lately. This should be a grind.

NHL Picks Contest Round Six ($100 Prize): New Jersey Devils at Columbus Blue Jackets 12/10

Two mediocre teams do battle in Columbus on Tuesday. Unimpressive as these two have been, I think it’s the most difficult game to predict in a full day of hockey.

The Devils are anchored in their excellent goaltending, but the offense has really struggled without Ilya Kovalchuk. They’re streaky, but right now they’re very cold.

Columbus nearly made the playoffs last season on the strength of their goaltending, but injuries have hurt them offensively. This should be a grind. I don’t see where the goals will come from.

This might be my favorite rivalry in hockey. Even though the Devils are exhausted and slumping, I expect a battle.

I don’t think the New York Rangers are that good. They’ve got one of the best defensive top pairings in hockey, and their goaltender, who just inked a massive contract, is definitely one of the best in hockey. NHL Picks Contest Standings Update (Round Five): Kings Ducks

I was a little disappointed this round, folks. Not only did we have one of our worst predictive performances of the year, but we also didn’t have much of a turnout. It’s certainly anyone’s game – as evidenced by the fact that nobody really moved around much in the standings this round. WE ONLY HAD SEVEN CORRECT GUESSES IN ROUND FIVE and our leaders failed to pad their leads.

The Anaheim Ducks blew it late, but they really didn’t deserve that one either. It was certainly an exciting game.
