Red Sox, Pirates, Mets, Yankees, Blue Jays: Weekend MLB Picks by Zcode

Boston Red Sox at Los Angeles Angels

The Red Sox are trying to bust their way out of a slight slump after they briefly overtook the orioles for the AL east and fell down to third place. In this four game series against the angels, they are currently tied at one game a piece. The Sox are starting Drew Pomeranz, who has bounced back from a slow start to the season and has a 2.84 ERA- 2.31 on the road. The Sox acquired him at the end of the all-star break and he will hopefully give them his first win tonight. Hector Santiago, the Angels starting pitcher, has managed to garner an impressive record despite a mediocre ERA. This game won’t be an easy win for the sox, but they certainly have an edge.

Red Sox 1.31 units to win 1

Pittsburgh Pirates at Milwaukee Brewers

The Brewers are arguably playing well for a bad team, but most of that momentum stems from winning three games against an even worse Diamondbacks team. The Pirates are starting their rookie could-be ace in hopes of regaining some momentum that they desperately need to stay playoff relevant. Jameson Taillon joined the Pirates in his MLB debut in early June and has been on fire since. He hasn’t walked a batter in his last three starts, throwing 6 solid innings each game with a 2.5 ERA. This matchup definitely favors the Pirates and as the better team who still has something to lose, we expect them to come out strong.

Pirates 1.51 to win 1

New York Mets vs. Colorado Rockies

The Rockies are on fire and are making one wonder if a sub .500 team could actually turn it around and still find its way to the playoffs. However, aside from the Rockies momentum, we think this matchup is the ideal scenario for their 4 game streak to come to a halt. The mets are starting Bartolo Colon (ERA 3.35) on short rest in hopes that he lead them to a much needed victory against the much weaker Jorge De La Rosa (ERA 5.70). Furthermore, the Mets are starting Syndergaard, their rock-solid ace, against Bettis (ERA 5.19) tomorrow. We’re picking the Mets in an AB progression with the two solid pitching advantages and syndergaard as the ultimate B bet insurance.

Mets 1.35 to win 1 AB

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays

The Yankees are trending downwards and the Rays are trending up. However, the Rays are the second worst team in the AL and the Yankees are still (barely) playoff relevant. In a matchup with two mediocre pitchers, we see great value in an underdog line on the clearly superior yankees team.

Yankees 1 unit to win 1.14

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Baltimore Orioles

The Orioles have lost their last four in a row and the Jays have won their last 4 of 5 while fighting desperately for the AL east. This is a crucial series with the Orioles only a half game ahead of the Jays for the division. Toronto has all the momentum and a solid pitching edge with Happ playing well (ERA of 1.57 in his last 3 starts). Furthermore, in tomorrows game the Jays are starting sanchez vs. Tillman- another big pitching edge for Toronto. We’re picking the Jays in an AB progression because we believe they will likely win both and almost certainly not lose both.

Toronto 1.69 to win 1 AB
