Just two matchdays remain in the Premier League and Monday, July 20 sees a trio of matches on the league’s penultimate day. Premier League matchday 37 will have a full slate of games spread out over a few days.
Monday will be a smorgasbord of games with a lot riding on each fixture heading into the closed season. Although Liverpool wrapped up the Premier League title, the league has a lot left to play for in terms of relegation, teams qualifying for the Champions League and Europa League in 2020-21 and prize money that is up for grabs. Let’s look at three Premier League matchday 37 games on tap for Monday night.
Brighton vs. Newcastle United
Newcastle United have nothing to play for and their last four games have certainly looked like it. The Magpies are winless in four straight games with each of the last three ending in losses. Brighton haven’t been much better and are winless in three straight league matches.
Brighton are six points above the relegation zone and a win or draw would see them safe to play in the Premier League next season. Based on Newcastle’s atrocious form and long injury list, eight players are listed as injured heading into the game, Brighton should get a win or draw to see them safe for another year in the top flight.
Result: Brighton win or draw
Sheffield United vs. Everton
A huge match in the race for Europa League qualification as Sheffield United host Everton at Bramall Lane. Everton are an awful away team having won just four times in 18 away matches. Four of their last six away fixtures ended in losses, so don’t expect the Toffees to defeat a defensively sound Sheffield United on Monday.
The Blades have won four straight home games and 10 of their 18 matches at Bramall Lane in 2019-20 ended in victory. Although Chris Wilder’ team struggle to score goals on the road, Sheffield United have bagged 24 at home for an average of 1.3 per game. They are a very good defensive team, which should come in handy against Everton, who have scored just 19 goals on the road.
Result: Sheffield United to win
Wolverhampton Wanderers vs. Crystal Palace
Wolverhampton Wanderers are the team Sheffield United are chasing in the race for the top six. Wolves have the advantage but could fall behind the Blades with a loss or draw. Nuno Espirito Santo’s team will have all the confidence in the world at home where they have lost just once in their last six games.
Crystal Palace are atrocious and haven’t won since the league restarted on June 17. They have lost six straight games and scored just two goals during that time. Five of their last six games saw Crystal Palace lose to nil.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are a good defensive team with goalkeeper Rui Patricio keeping 12 clean sheets (third-most in the league). Wolves should get a win to nil against Crystal Palace. Again, the Eagles goal scoring is abysmal. This game should also see under 2.5 goals scored.
Result: Wolverhampton Wanderers to win to nil
