NHL Picks: Winter Classic Predictions – Toronto Maple Leafs at Detroit Red Wings

Ah, some good ol’ fashioned pond hockey on New Year’s Day. Does it get any better? Maybe slightly better, if the teams were having better years. Either way, this should be a dandy.

Two of the most inconsistent teams in hockey play an outdoor game in front of a national audience. The quality of the ice is tricky, the game tends to be a little sloppy, and the nostalgia is full blown. This should be a fun contest between two Original Six franchises.

The Red Wings have goalie issues, and it’s led to unprecedented inconsistency from one of the winningest franchises in hockey history. The Leafs reloaded, but bouts of inconsistency and injury have hurt their season as well. Neither team is reliable, so this one is just for fun, and does not qualify for most expert systems in the Z-Code community.

The computer and I disagree, so we’ll start the year off with a man vs machine challenge. The computer says all the value is on the Leafs, and gives them five stars of underdog value. The computer also says the Red Wings are more likely to pull this one out, but doesn’t see value in the line. I do, and think the Wings will pull this one out.

Red Wings 3 – Leafs 2
