NHL Picks: New York Rangers at Tampa Bay Lightning

What happened to the Tampa Bay Lightning? Steven Stamkos, the most exciting forward in hockey? Ben Bishop, the goalie that made this amazing offense a viable threat to win games? This amazing offense? There have been injuries, but the Tampa Bay Lightning have really struggled this year and look to be in trouble already.

The New York Rangers are fulfilling expectations. I had them as the top team in the Metropolitan division and they’re cruising ahead of the rest of the pack. The Rangers are on an exciting win streak and playing great hockey behind arguably the best goaltender and defense in the NHL. The Rangers have enough offense and incredible depth. With all the momentum in the world, it’s hard to see the Lightning winning this one. As such, there is incredible value, even on the road.

That said, this is far from a sure thing. The computer is in agreement across all parameters but expects a very tight game. The New York Rangers are on the road and a pretty long way from home. Moreover, the Tampa Bay Lightning have one of those goalies that can steal a game from you even when it plays out as planned.

Still, I like this one for a system play. The New York Rangers are the vastly superior team right now. They’re rested, they’re ready, and I think they win this one even if Tampa can keep it close.
