NHL Picks February 8: Pittsburgh versus Boston headline action

The NHL season has surpassed the halfway point and teams are preparing to make a push for playoff seeding. There are a handful of games scheduled for February 8 with the Penguins and Bruins Eastern Conference battle headlining the action.

Pittsburgh Penguins versus Boston Bruins

The Pittsburgh Penguins enter 3rd in the Metropolitan Division and the Boston Bruins are 4th in the Atlantic Division. Pittsburgh has a +24 to +17 edge on the Power Ranking Indicator and the Bruins are “average” versus “ice cold down” on the Team Strength Oscillator. Note that the Bruins are home favorites with odds of 1.872 to 2.076. Both teams have been trending in games “over” the line, and the Score Predictor has the Bruins by a 3-2 score with 48 percent confidence. Both teams have been very stable according to the Team Volatility Oscillator. I like the Bruins at home in a tight contest going “over” the line.

Columbus Blue Jackets versus Washington Capitals

Two mid-level Metropolitan Division teams battle in Washington. The Capitals have a +21 to +14 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator and “average down” versus “ice cold up” on the Team Strength Oscillator. Both teams have been trending in high-scoring games, and the Score Predictor has the Blue Jackets by a 4-3 score with 50 percent confidence. Washington is a decided home favorite with odds of 1.40 to 3.3. Take note that Columbus is at +14 on the Team Volatility Oscillator, indicating that they perform very consistently with their favorite/underdog status. I like the Capitals to win in a rout, going “over” the line.

Minnesota Wild versus Winnipeg Jets

In this Central Division game, the 3rd-place Wild head to Winnipeg to face the 6th-place Jets. Minnesota is “burning hot”, winning nine of their last ten. They have a +28 to +10 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator over the Jets, who are “dead” after going 2-6-2 over their last ten. The Score Predictor sees the Wild winning by a 4-2 score with 44 percent confidence. Minnesota is a road favorite with odds of 1.765 to 2.228. The Totals Predictor indicates both teams are trending in games “over” the line. Go with the Wild on the road by a couple of goals in a high-scoring contest.

Arizona Coyotes versus Vancouver Canucks

Here is a game with two teams going nowhere. The Coyotes have the worst record in the NHL. They are “dead” on the Team Strength Oscillator and +1 on the Power Ranking Indicator, while the Canucks are “ice cold down” and +12, respectively. The Score Predictor has the Canucks in a 6-1 blowout win with 67 percent confidence. Vancouver is a solid 1.492 to 2.895 favorite. Note that the Coyotes are +22 on the Team Volatility Oscillator which means they are extremely consistent with regard to their favorite/underdog status. This game will be an easy victory for the Canucks in a game going “over” the line.
