MLB Playoff simulator: What if the season ended today?

The Major League Baseball season is about to enter its final month. Currently, the Boston Red Sox have MLB’s best record at 93-42 (as of August 31). The Red Sox have been nearly unstoppable this season and lead their rivals, the New York Yankees, by 8.5 games. The Red Sox are +333 to win the World Series according to major sportsbooks.

The National League’s best team is the Chicago Cubs. The Chi-Town team has posted a 79-54 record (as of August 31). The St. Louis Cardinals are giving chase in the central while the Milwaukee Brewers have fallen off since the end of the trade deadline. The Cubs are listed at odds of +700 to win the World Series, according to top sportsbooks.

The Oakland A’s have been the biggest head turners in recent weeks. The A’s are 2.5 games back of the Houston Astros (as of August 31). Some have said Oakland is changing MLB once more, much like it did with ‘Moneyball’ in the early 2000s. Despite the so-called way the A’s have changed baseball, MLB experts should remember the A’s have not won the World Series despite all the Moneyball praise. Oakland is currently +1300 to win the World Series, according to top sportsbooks.

With the MLB season coming to a close, ZCode System ran an MLB Playoff Simulator. The current five teams in the American League playoff positions are the Boston Red Sox, Houston Astros, Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees, and the Oakland A’s. In the National League, the playoff teams are the Chicago Cubs, Atlanta Braves, Arizona Diamondbacks, Milwaukee Brewers, and St. Louis Cardinals.

So, which teams will win their respective leagues? And which will win the World Series?

According to the ZCode System’s Playoff Simulator, the Boston Red Sox would win the World Series, if the MLB season finished today. The NL’s Chicago Cubs would challenge the Fenway Park baseball club for the title with the World Series going to seven games.

Interestingly, the simulator predicts the New York Yankees being knocked out of the playoffs in the Wild Card round.

Last season’s World Series winners, the Astros, are predicted to lose to the Cleveland Indians in their first postseason series. Not since 1998 through 2000 has an MLB team won consecutive World Series titles. The Astros have recent history against them.

The New York Yankees were MLB’s last team to win consecutive championships. On that occasion, the Yankees won three in a row. Before the Yankees pulled off the feat, the Toronto Blue Jays did it in 1992 and 1993. Winning back to back championships is a difficult task to accomplish in MLB.

So, should bettors go all in on the Boston Red Sox? The Red Sox have been the cream of the crop this season. The signing of J.D. Martinez has turned out to be one of the most significant offseason moves by any MLB team. Martinez is hitting .336 with 39 home runs and 114 RBIs. Compare him to Yankees’ slugger Giancarlo Stanton and Martinez is proving he should be the AL’s Most Valuable Player. Stanton is hitting just .277 with 33 home runs and 84 RBIs. Other than the home runs, he has been a disappointment in the Bronx.

Are the Red Sox destined to win the World Series?
