Less than a month remains in the MLB regular season, and each series takes on added importance. 11 games are scheduled for September 7. I will make picks for what I believe are the top four games of the day, with the Phillies hosting the Braves topping the list.
Atlanta Braves versus Philadelphia Phillies
The Braves enter in first in the NL East with the Phillies right behind them. Atlanta is “burning hot” versus “average” on the Team Strength Oscillator and +29 to +21 on the Power Ranks Indicator. The teams are trending in games on opposite sides of the “over/under” line, and the Braves have a huge scoring differential edge of +121 to +33. Atlanta is 36-33 on the road, while Philadelphia is 38-31 at home. Bryce Elder is scheduled to pitch for the Braves versus Jesus Lazardo for the Phillies. Both pitchers are good bets, coming in at $153 and +531, respectively, on the Pitcher Profit Oscillator. The Braves have won six of the first seven games between the teams this season. The Phillies need some wins this weekend to have a shot at overtaking the Braves. Go with the Phillies to claim a win here, but pass on the over/under bet.
Cleveland Guardians versus Baltimore Orioles
Both teams are in the middle of the AL playoff race, but are heading in opposite directions. Cleveland is “burning hot” after going 4-2 over the last six games, while Baltimore is “ice cold down” after losing the last four. The teams are trending in games on opposite sides of the line with a predicted total of nine runs with 72 percent confidence. Both teams are in the red in scoring differential, while Cleveland has a better road record than Baltimore’s home record. Both teams are moderately stable, according to the Team Volatility Oscillator. Cleveland is +19 to +7 on the Power Ranks Indicator and won three of the first four games between the teams this season. I like Cleveland to continue to roll, winning in a game “over” the line.
Chicago Cubs versus Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers hold an eight-game lead over the Cubs in the NL Central, although the Cubs are still a big part of the wild card picture. Chicago is “burning hot” versus “average” on the Team Strength Oscillator. The teams have been involved in games “over” the line in nine of the last 12 combined, although the predicted total is only four runs, but with only 55 percent confidence. The teams are a combined +312 in scoring differential. The Cubs have an excellent road record of 39-31, and the Brewers are among the best in the league at home, at 47-25. The Brewers have won six of the 10 games between the teams this season. Note that the Brewers are among the most consistent teams in the league regarding their favorite/underdog status, at +24 on the Team Volatility Oscillator. I like the Brewers at home in a game “over” the line.
St. Louis Cardinals versus San Francisco Giants
The Cardinals are at .500 with slim playoff possibilities still alive, while the Giants are 26.5 games out in the NL West. Both teams are 3-3 over the last six, with the Cardinals at “average” versus “average down” on the Team Strength Oscillator. The teams have been involved in games “over” the line in 10 of the last 12, but both teams are in the red in scoring differential. After being very inconsistent over the first couple of months of the season, the Giants have been among the most stable teams in the league since the middle of July. St. Louis is 37-33 on the road, while San Francisco is 33-36 at home. This is the first meeting between the teams this season. I like the Cardinals on the road, they have more to play for and are the better team. The game should be high-scoring, so bet “over” the line.
