MLB Picks May 16: Cardinals and Padres Highlight Sunday’s Action

Over 20 percent of the MLB season is in the books and divisional races are starting to heat up. There is a full slate of games scheduled for May 16. We will take a look at five of them with the Cardinals and Padres the featured game.

St. Louis Cardinals versus San Diego Padres

The Cardinals enter first in the NL Central and the Padres are second in the NL West. St. Louis has a +26 to +25 edge on the Power Ranking Indicator and both teams are “average” on the Team Strength Oscillator. If considering the “over/under” bet, the teams have been trending on opposite sides of the line, making this a shaky bet at best. Kwang Hyun Kim is set to pitch for the Cardinals and Ryan Weathers is scheduled to start on the mound for the Padres. Kim is 1-0 with a 2.74 ERA and +1037 on the Pitcher Profit Oscillator. Weathers is 2-1 with a 0.81 ERA and +246. The Scores Predictor has the Cardinals by a 4-3 score with 61 percent confidence. Take the Cardinals on the road in an upset victory.

Los Angeles Angels versus Boston Red Sox

The Angles head to Boston last in the AL West and take on the AL East division leader. Los Angeles has a +10 to +9 edge on the Power Ranking Indicator and the Red Sox are “average down” versus “ice cold down” on the Team Strength Oscillator. Avoid the “over/under” since the Totals Predictor has the teams trending on opposite sides of the line. Jose Quintana is scheduled to pitch for the Angels and is coming in 0-3 with a 9.00 ERA. He’s also been a poor bet at -807 on the Pitcher Profit Oscillator. The Scores Predictor has the Angels by an 8-4 score, but only 48 percent confidence. I am going the other way with it, taking the Red Sox at home.

Atlanta Braves versus Milwaukee Brewers

The Braves are 3rd in the NL East and the Brewers are 2nd in the NL Central. Atlanta has a +16 to +4 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator and the Brewers are “burning hot” versus “average up” on the Team Strength Oscillator. Huascar Ynoa is scheduled to pitch for the Braves. He is 4-1 with a 2.23 ERA and +249 on the Pitcher Profit Oscillator.  The Scores Predictor shoes the Brewers winning by a 5-3 score, but the confidence in the pick is only 43 percent, so take that with a grain of salt. The scheduled pitcher for the Brewers has not been announced. Milwaukee is only 9-9 at home. Go with the Braves to come away with a road win.

Washington Nationals versus Arizona Diamondbacks

Both teams are struggling in the respective divisions. Washington comes in 5th in the NL East and the Diamondbacks are 4th in the NL West. The teams have already met four times this season, splitting the meetings. The Diamondbacks have a +18 to +1 margin on the Power Ranking Indicator and “ice cold up” versus “average” on the Team Strength Oscillator.  The “over/under” isn’t a great bet with the teams trending on opposite sides of the line. Arizona is picked to win by a 7-6 score, but only with 43 percent confidence on the Scores Predictor.  Take the Diamondbacks to win and cover at home.

Texas Rangers versus Houston Astros

In this AL West battle, the 4th-place Rangers take on the 2nd-place Astros. The teams are both +20 on the Power Ranking Indicator and the Astros are “average” versus” ice cold down” on the Team Strength Oscillator. Kyle Gibson is on the mound for the Rangers versus Lance McCullers Jr for the Astros. Gibson is 3-0 with a 2.28 ERA and a great bet at +875 on the Pitcher Profit Oscillator. McCullers is 3-1 with a 3.10 ERA but has been a relatively poor bet at -77 dollars. The Scores Predictor shows a large 8-1 margin of victory for the Astros with 70 percent confidence. I agree and see the Astros rolling in this one.
