If you followed the picks posted on Friday, they all hit once the Orioles pulled off the narrow win Saturday night. We’re now approaching all-star week, but there are still a few games today that we at z-code see value in.
Reds at Marlins
The 46-41 Marlins are looking to sweep the 32-56 Reds at home to close out the series before all star week. The Marlins have been playing well with only 2 losses in their last 6 games. Meanwhile the Reds have only won 2 of their last 6. The key to this matchup, however, will be the pitching. The Marlins are starting Tom Koehler who is 6-7 with an at home ERA of 3.96 while the Reds are starting Cody Reed who’s 0-3 with an era of 11.08 in his last three starts. The Marlins are clearly the better team and the pitching matchup tilts the scale strongly in their favor. As their trying to close in on the Nationals or pick up a wild card spot for the NL they’ll be trying to capitalize on their momentum and close this series out with another win before the all star break. The -159 line represents great value here.
Cubs at Pirates
Three weeks ago the Chicago Cubs seemed virtually unbeatable and definitely unsweepable. However, after being swept at least twice since then, they’ve fallen into a deadly slump. They have lost 5 of their last 6 and just can’t seem to gather any momentum. Momentum is crucial in baseball and its effect is compounded this weekend with every team vying for positions leading into the all star break. Pittsburgh has the right kind of momentum as they’ve won 5 of their last 6 and are steadily gaining on the slumping cubs to win the Central NL. Pittsburgh desperately needs to close this series out and the Cubs have to be feeling like they just can’t win. I imagine we’ll see chicago bounce back after the break, but tonight I think this is pittsburgh’s show. The +141 line is great value and makes them a perfect underdog pick.
