NHL Playoffs Predictions: Canadiens, Rangers, Wild, and Ducks

NHL Playoffs Predictions: Habs, Ducks, Rangers, Wild in Second Round Let’s take a look at our bracket. We got the entire Eastern Conference right, and we’ve made profit on the first round of the NHL Playoffs again. We got five of the eight and missed the Minnesota Wild taking out the Blues and the Calgary Flames taking out the Canucks. Honestly, if Shea Weber doesn’t go down I think the Nashville Predators had a great chance at knocking off the Chicago Blackhawks. All in all, not a bad round. Our Finals picks are still alive, and we were low confidence on a couple of those losses. We won money in the first round, and now, with a better grasp of the NHL playoffs field, we look to build on it. Here’s my picks for the NHL Playoffs second round where I’ve got the New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens, Anaheim Ducks, and Minnesota Wild advancing.

Like I said in the last edition of our playoffs picks contest, I loe the third game of a series. Will the favorite be on their heels? Will the home underdog fight to stay alive? As momentum shifts and matchups shape up, intensity rises as these games mean everything. The Anaheim Ducks cruised to victory of the Jets while the Calgary Flames simply outplayed the Canucks. When they face one another in the second round, who will Game Three in Calgary?

After a home progression and two flat bets on the road, we’re up some decent money on the St. Louis Blues against the Minnesota Wild in this 2-2 series. I almost hate to keep featuring it, but this is my favorite series of the NHL playoffs.

Again we see a mild signal from the computer favoring the St. Louis Blues. The 57% chance to win at home here is justified by the line and the value is relatively limited. Still, the Blues had a phenomenal season and I continue to  ...

The Anaheim Ducks got lucky. End of story. Ondrej Pavelec is the hottest goalie in hockey right now and the Ducks won Game Two because of a missed too many men on the ice call followed soon after by a missed holding the stick call behind the net seconds before that same player got free to score the game winner with 20 seconds to go. I apologize, guys. I forgot to post a pick today and it’s a shame because we would have won some money together. We were on the Canadiens, Capitals, and Canucks today and at the time of this writing the Canucks are up 2-0, but obviously that game is far from over. I don’t really mind Jake Allen being named the starter tonight, even if he was primarily a backup all season. He posted 22-7-4 record and has been exceptional of late. In fact, I think he gives St. Louis an edge because their platoon has faltered in the playoffs and going with the hot hand is the right strategy here.

On the flip side, Devan Dubnyk has given the Minnesota Wild some stability in net this year. While I have never been impressed with him overall, he’s stood out this season  ...

– Game Three: Sunday, April 20th

I like when our NHL picks contest spills over into the playoffs because Game Three with a favorite going on the road for the first time is the definition of a toss up. I think the Caps are the better team and I’m posting this before we know exactly what kind of desperation will turn this into a contest toss up. Will the Islanders be desperate and fighting for their lives? Will they surprise and take control of the series, forcing the Washington Capitals to fight to regain home ice? The Caps are -140 to win the series, -145 at home to open the series, and the first road game of the series is a perfect chance to test what the Islanders are made of.

In the past three years we’ve gotten a total of two series wrong in the first round. While our brackets have tended to fade as the NHL playoffs go on, first round matchups have been something of a specialty for me with Z-Code. That said, I look at this first round as a bunch of volatile, unpredictable matchups. We’ll do this bracket for fun because it’s become something of a tradition, but I won’t be betting every series line anymore — for the first time since college.

NHL Picks: New Jersey Devils at Florida Panthers

The best hockey game I’ve ever seen in person was the double-overtime thriller in Florida during the Devils’ most recent Stanley Cup run. Martin Brodeur stood on his head as the Florida Panthers dominated overtime following a late goal to tie it all up. Adam Henrique, who could barely skate his legs were so tried, fired a shot from deep in the slot and the New Jersey Devils advanced from the first round. It was the biggest bet I’ve ever made when combined with the series bets I had laid down.
