UEFA Euro 2020 quarterfinal picks July 2-3: Europe’s elite 8 aim for semifinal qualification

The UEFA Euro 2020 quarterfinal games kick on on Friday, July 2, and finish up a day later on Saturday, July 3. Just eight teams remain in the Euro 2020 tournament and four teams will punch their tickets to the semifinals.

The round of 16 had a number of shock results. France were defeated on penalties by Switzerland in the game of the tournament thus far. England defeated Germany 2-0 to claim their first win over the Germans since 1966. The Czech Republic posted a 2-0 win over the Netherlands sending the Dutch crashing out of the competition.

Will the UEFA Euro 2020 quarterfinal round be similar in shock results or will the favourites go through?

Switzerland (+450) vs. Spain (-150)

Spain stuttered in the group stage drawing versus Sweden and Poland before sealing progression to the round of 16 against Slovakia with a 5-0 win. Luis Enrique’s team followed up the win with a victory against Croatia in a thriller in the round of 16. It took extra-time for Spain to win 5-3.

Switzerland came from 3-1 down in the final 10 minutes to defeat Euro 2020 tournament favorite France in the round of 16. It took a brilliant penalty shootout for the Swiss to go through.

Switzerland are once again underdogs. They have shown that onlookers cannot take them lightly. Spain have found another gear at the tournament since their back-to-back draws to start the tournament. Friday’s game should be a close affair with Spain edging past Switzerland. Spain have lost just once in 23 all-time meetings. La Roja have won 16 times previously. Alvaro Morata is in great form and could get on the scoresheet once more.

Result: Spain to win

Belgium (+240) vs. Italy (+130)

The only problem with Belgium versus Italy is that this fixture is not the final. These are the two best teams at the tournament to this point. Italy go into the game following a 2-1 win over Austria. However, it took extra-time to get the win after the match finished nil-nil at full-time.

Belgium knocked out Portugal in a fantastic 1-0 game. The Belgian needed a strong defensive performance down the stretch which included Portugal hitting the goalpost with just five minutes left.

Belgium are underdogs despite being the world’s No. 1 team. Why? Manager Roberto Martinez is likely to be without key players Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard. Both have played well at the tournament. Italy have not conceded a goal in their last 12 games at the end of full-time. Although Belgium still have striker Romelu Lukaku, Italy’s defence should keep the Red Devils in check.

Friday’s game should be low scoring with under 2.5 goals scored. While Soccer Buddy predicts a 2-2 draw, I believe this will be a low-scoring Italy win.

Result: Italy win

Czech Republic (+280) vs. Denmark (+110)

Denmark are playing well having scored four goals in each of their last two matches. They are the tournament’s Cinderella team following Christian Eriksen’s near-tragic collapse at the beginning of the tournament.

The Czech Republic shocked everyone with a 2-0 win over the Netherlands. They are playing well and riding striker Patrik Schick. He has four goals at the tournament.

Denmark should continue their Cinderella form with a win against the Czechs. Manager Kasper Hjulmand could be without Yussuf Poulsen for the game, but Kasper Dolberg tallied two goals against Wales. Right now, everything is coming together for the Danes. While a 3-0 win may be a stretch too far, Denmark should qualify for the semifinals with a win.

Result: Denmark to win

Ukraine (+750) vs. England (-250)

England are now favourites to win the Euro 2020 tournament with France eliminated from the competition. England are +187 to claim the Euro trophy. Can they do it? It almost feels like they are being suckered into losing in the quarterfinals or semifinals.

Ukraine are next up after just getting into the round of 16. They were the last team to progress from the group stage due to a poor points return. Ukraine defeated Sweden in extra-time in the round of 16 to set this match up.

England defeated Germany 2-0 and it could be the result that sees the team play more free-flowing football. England have not been great in attack but the defence has been excellent. The Three Lions are built on defence and have allowed zero goals in four matches.

The Three Lions should claim a win against Ukraine without conceding a goal to the Ukrainians. They may not win the tournament, but they will reach the quarters with a win to nil.

Result: England to win to nil
