Congratulations to both Alex Dionne and Duane Atkinson on amazing contest results. I’ve never seen anything like it – double the wins of any of our next closest competitors. A tip of the hat to you both, you killed it!

Alas, there could only be one winner. With both guys settled in at nine wins and choosing opposing teams, Duane pulled off an extra innings victory as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Colorado Rockies to secure his free $100 prize as our contest winner. This is incredible. I’ve never seen two people rise to the top like this edition of the contest. Coin flip after coin flip, Duane and Alex continue to impress. After a thumping in game one, the Toronto Blue Jays bounced back and knocked off the Boston Red Sox. With split results, here is the latest update to our standings. Remember, first to ten gets $100, and if there’s a tie we’ll go to an extra round of blind picks overtime where each player submits selections by private message, which is always a lot of fun. Well, this is how we want them to shake up, right? So many variables, so much to look at, and a coin flip line with conflicted computer parameters. Contest games are supposed to be just like this, and I’m always happy when I find them a week in advance. Good luck.

The All-Star Break is over, so let’s get back to our competition. I’ll feature a couple of mediocre teams, divisional rivals, in the back end of their pitching rotation for this one.

I avoid games where there is volatility like this. Bad teams create unpredictability. This game could go either way. Home edge, or a winning tradition in recent years? Both teams are playing pretty average baseball coming into the break, so Tuesday’s game looks like a toss up to me.

I liked the Tanaka matchup yesterday, but the Yankee bats are a little cold. I also like this matchup with a newly acquired pitcher going against a middling AL Central team.

McCarthy hasn’t been great this year, but the Yankees see something in him that they didn’t see in Vlad Nuno before dealing him to the NL. I think McCarthy, on the road and away from the short porches he’s used to struggling with in Arizona and now New York, should be able to silence the Cleveland bats.

I think the Rays have a pitching edge throughout this entire series, and they host one of the weakest teams in baseball. I recognize that a loss here in a progression likely means a $400 bet on game two with Price, but I’m confident they pull through.

The Astros have stumbled a bit lately and talk of them turning a corner seems to have been short lived. The pitching has faltered a bit, and they’re back on the road. I don’t think the worst team in baseball can take out these three pitchers  ...

These two teams have completely fallen off the map, and true to our competition form, there really isn’t much of a signal on this game. The computer expects a close game, with an 83% chance of a game decided by one goal. That said, the underdog value parameter conflicts with the money line output odds. There’s just no reason to chase this game.
