2014 NHL Predictions: Rangers, Devils, Penguins in Metropolitan Division Preview

Football is going strong in week five, baseball is in the playoffs, and excitement is brewing for the best time of the sports calendar… that said, all I can think about is hockey. Here’s our first preview of the season… my personal favorite, the former Atlantic, the Metropolitan division.2014 NHL Predictions: Metropolitan Division Preview The Pittsburgh Penguins dumped one of their big three, the New York Rangers lost a ton of depth, the Philadelphia Flyers are again relying on Steve Mason to have career-best success, and my New Jersey Devils added a bunch of key pieces. Martin Brodeur and the Future of the New Jersey Devils

It doesn’t sound like Martin Brodeur is all that ready to hang up the skates. He did slip in his post-game interview and call Sunday’s matinee with the Bruins his last start, but he quickly backtracked to indecision. Unfortunately, it also doesn’t seem like the Devils really want him back. Marty is unlikely to happily accept a role as a backup, and it’s hard to imagine him platooning in New Jersey for another year. This might be goodbye for a number of reasons.

It would be weird to see Brodeur in another uniform, so the child in me is hoping for retirement or a 20-game role to stay in New Jersey and keep Cory Schneider fresh next season. Brodeur is arguably the greatest goaltender to ever play the game, and doing it all for one team makes it special. That said, he’s a stubborn man.

This is a heartbreak or hope game for me, so kindly ignore my various and blatant biases in evaluating this game. I think the Devils can make the playoffs. Here’s why:

1. The Columbus Blue Jackets are about to play three top teams. I think they could lose all three. They were sellers at the deadline and this is a deadly stretch in their schedule.

2. The Devils play the Caps later this week. Win and they leap both non-playoff teams to become the top threat to Columbus’ WC 2 spot.

The Devils are playing some of their best hockey of the year right now, amidst goalie controversy and Kovalchuk nonsense they’ve won three of the first four games out of the break. The Flyers are in position to make the playoffs after surging ahead of the pack, but there are a handful of teams hot on their tails. This is another huge game in a huge rivalry. Who ya got?

My New Jersey Devils blew the lead in the third, and ultimately lost in overtime to the hated Philadelphia Flyers. A few of you were able to successfully predict the outcome of this challenging game. Congratulations!

NHL Picks Contest Round Nine: Philadelphia Flyers at New Jersey Devils

As usual, we’ve picked a good one. The line is essentially a coin flip and the computer and I disagree. Tough game to predict.

For me this comes down to goaltending and defense. I think the Devils have the better goalie, I think neither team has much of a defense, and I think the Devils’ depth matches up well with the Flyers’ isolated scoring. At home, I think that’s all they’ll need to win this one.
