This is a tricky game. I don’t think I’ve seen such a strong underdog prediction in some time, but beware the conflicting parameters of the algorithm here.

While Z-Code suggests that there is an 83% chance of a Nationals win, it also says there is only a 68% chance of the Nationals covering a +1.5 spread. There’s five star support, but obviously those numbers do not add up. The system is conflicted, and the read out is not nearly as strong as the first glance suggests.

Verlander has had a horrible season. He’s been hard to trust, his ERA is much higher than we expected when the season began, and the results aren’t there. He doesn’t warrant wagers at sharp lines.

That said, -160 isn’t that sharp.

The Tigers are the far better team. This is a bad opportunity for a progression because it lacks a statistical edge and the next pitching matchup is dangerous. Still, there’s an obvious pitching edge to the Tigers in this particular game, at home, and they’re clearly the better team. The line seems reasonable, and there’s value here.

I wouldn’t go all in here, but for a low-confidence wager, this isn’t bad.
