Only last year, it wasn’t a common sight to see a League of Legends tournament being offered on Paddypower. Now such things are possible as the industry is booming, it has established its own media with Twitch.tv being owned by Amazon and taking on 151st place in the Alexa ranking of the most popular websites in the world. Twitch.tv is where it all began, well Own3d.tv at first but that company went bankrup and Twitch became a monopoly, before then eSports was trying to make its way to the mainstream TV media, which is something that hasn’t worked out.
Although eSports isn’t yet recognised as a sport, it’s certainly going in the direction of being recognised as one in the near future. I myself have been following the growth of eSports for the last 6 years, having a bit of gameplay on CS.GO. I’m really surprised how professional it all became in the past 5 years. Many of the professional gamers make over 500,000$ per year and the DOTA2 international holds $18,429,613 of prize pool. This is as much as 2 Wimbledons in tennis for both males and females!!!
