NHL Picks: Washington Capitals at Minnesota Wild

This game is quite the Las Vegas trap. The line opened at -125 and has fallen to -120 despite public money pouring in on the road team, the Washington Capitals. That’s always a dangerous sign on a popular and “obvious” game. What’s more, the Minnesota Wild are way too good to be losing this often. The Wild are due, and really, the Caps are kind of due for a loss.

The schedule has not been kind to the surging Washington Capitals, which makes their play of late all the more impressive. They are on a nice win streak – the exact opposite of the Minnesota Wild – but if you look at what they’ve done during this stretch it is really something else. The Caps have played every other day since the new year, plus a back to back, with half their games on the road. This stretch has to be taking it’s toll.

So why bet the Washington Capitals here? The line is a trap, the Wild are better than their record suggests, the Caps should be tired, and the game is on the road. Still, the Caps have the best goalie in hockey right now and arguably the best team. They are winning, and it takes a lot to derail that kind of momentum. Despite many signals of a dangerous game, I’m on the Washington Capitals here for a system play.

Zcode agrees, tentatively, with 3.5 stars of value and a 56% chance of victory, despite some conflict in the algorithm.
