MLB Picks May 5: Yankees host Padres in interleague clash

A month into the Major League Baseball season, the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers have moved ahead of the pack in the National League.  The Detroit Tigers, Seattle Mariners, and New York Yankees lead the way in the American League, with many teams in close pursuit. We will examine four games for May 5 with the Yankees hosting the Padres as the featured game.

San Diego Padres versus New York Yankees

The Padres enter 2nd in the NL West, and the Yankees are on top in the AL East. San Diego is “average up” versus “average down” on the Team Strength Oscillator and +24 to +15 on the Power Ranks Indicator. The teams are trending in games “over” the line with a score prediction of 8-4 in favor of the Padres, but with only 51 percent confidence. The Yankees won two of three in San Diego earlier last season by a combined total of 14-6. New York has a scoring differential edge of +55 to +33 and 11-5 at home versus 6-7 on the road for San Diego. I like the Yankees to continue their hot play at home in a game “over” the line.

Cincinnati Reds versus Atlanta Braves

The Reds are 2nd in the NL Central, and the Braves are third in the NL East at 14-17. Cincinnati is “average up” versus “average” on the Team Strength Oscillator and +23 to +6 on the Power Ranks Indicator. Brady Singer is scheduled to pitch for the Reds. He is 4-1 with a 3.24 ERA and a solid bet at +$166 on the Pitcher Profit Oscillator. The teams are trending in games on opposite sides of the line, and the Reds have a scoring differential edge of +42 to 0. Cincinnati has done well on the road with a 9-7 record. Both teams are moderately consistent at +5 on the Team Volatility Oscillator. I like the Reds on the road, but pass on the over/under bet.

Houston Astros versus Milwaukee Brewers

Both teams are hovering around the .500 mark in their respective divisions, and both are “average down” after a 3-3 stretch over the last six games. The Astros have struggled to a 5-8 record on the road versus 9-5 at home for the Brewers. The teams are trending in games “over” the line, and the Astros have a slight edge in scoring differential of +9 to +6. Houston won two of three last year against Milwaukee at home. The Brewers have been much more consistent performing with regards to their favorite/underdog status. I like the Brewers at home in a game “over” the line.

New York Mets versus Arizona Diamondbacks

The Mets have the second-best record in the NL and a 3.5-game lead in the NL East. The Diamondbacks are 17-15 and give games away in the NL West. Arizona is “burning hot” versus “average down” on the Team Strength Oscillator and +14 to +11 on the Power Ranks Indicator.  Griffin Canning is scheduled to pitch for the Mets. He enters with a record of 4-1 with a 2.61 ERA, but has a 4.41 ERA over the last three starts. The teams are trending in games “under” the line, and the Mets have a large scoring differential edge of +58 to +9. Arizona won two of three in New York last week.  The Diamondbacks are only 8-8 at home and I like the Mets in a road upset in a game “under” the line.
