MLB Picks August 4: Mets host Guardians in headlined matchup

The MLB trade deadline has passed, and teams are ready to make a push over the final two months of the season. There are plenty of interesting matchups for Monday, August 4. I will examine four of those games with the Mets hosting the Guardians in the featured game.

Baltimore Orioles versus Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies enter second in the NL East, and the Orioles are last in the AL East. Baltimore is 6-4 over the last ten and “burning hot down” on the Team Strength Oscillator, while Philadelphia is “average down” and 3-3 over the last six. The teams are trending in games “over” the line, and the Phillies have a huge run differential edge of +67 to -67. The Phillies are 33-19 at home, and the Orioles are 23-32 on the road. The teams haven’t met yet this season, but the Orioles won two of three last year in Baltimore. The Phillies are considerably more stable, at +25 to +7 on the Team Volatility Oscillator. I like the Phillies at home in a game “over” the line.

Cleveland Guardians versus New York Mets

Despite losing their last three, the Mets sit on top of the NL East while the Guardians are nine games back in the AL Central. Cleveland is “burning hot” versus “average down” on the Team Strength Oscillator and +18 to +13 on the Power Ranks Indicator. The teams have been involved in more games “over” the line than “under” recently, with a score prediction of 6-3 in favor of Cleveland with 63 percent confidence.  The Mets have one of the best home records in the league at 37-16, while the Guardians are a game under .500 on the road. The Mets have a +43 to -29 scoring differential edge and look to bounce back against the Guardians after being swept in Cleveland last year. I like the Mets, but pass on the “over/under” bet.

New York Yankees versus Texas Rangers

The Yankees are 3.5 games out in the AL East and “burning hot” after winning their last three, while the Rangers are 5.5 games out in the AL West and “average down” on the Team Strength Oscillator. Both teams are trending in games “over” the line and are a combined +165 in scoring differential. New York has a huge +22 to +8 edge on the Power Ranks Indicator and swept the Rangers earlier this season in three low-scoring games. The Rangers have been more consistent with regard to their favorite/underdog status. Texas is 34-20 at home compared to 26-27 on the road for the Yankees. I like the Rangers in a game “under” the line.

St. Louis Cardinals versus Los Angeles Dodgers

The Cardinals come in “ice cold down” after a recent 2-4 stretch, while the Dodgers are “average down” after going 3-3 over their last six games. Both teams are trending in games “under” the line, and the Dodgers have a +67 to -9 scoring differential advantage. Both teams have spiraled downward on the Power Ranks Indicator, with the Dodgers currently holding a +9 to +5 edge. St. Louis won two of three against Los Angeles earlier this season at home, but the Dodgers are 35-21 at home versus the Cardinals’ 23-31 record on the road.  The Dodgers have also been the more stable team at +21 to +11 on the Team Volatility Oscillator. I like the Dodgers in a game “under” the line.
