NHL predictions: January 12

Vancouver Canucks versus Columbus Blue Jackets

The Canucks are sitting near the bottom of the Pacific Division while the Blue Jackets are in the upper tier in the Metropolitan Division. Near team are fairing well on the Team Strength Oscillator, “ice cold down” for Columbus and “dead” for Vancouver. Columbus has a +12 to +1 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator and are tied for third in Team Volatility. Look for the Blue Jackets to take this one, pushing Vancouver further down in the standings.

Calgary Flames versus Florida Panthers

Both teams are in the middle of the pack in their respective divisions, although Calgary holds the advantage in most of the oscillators. They are “burning hot” versus “average” and hold a 10 point edge on the Power Ranking Indicator. The Flames also took both meetings between the teams last season and that trend is likely to continue. Calgary should win this one by two goals.

Washington Capitals versus Carolina Hurricanes

Carolina looks to gain some ground on the first place Capitals in the Metropolitan Division. The season series is even at one game each, however Washington holds a large advantage on the oscillators. They are “burning hot” and +27 on the Power Ranking Indicator, versus “average up” and “16. Even though Carolina is at home, I see Washington pulling this one out late.

Winnipeg Jets versus Chicago Black Hawks

This is a match up between first and last in the division, however the Black Hawks won the first meeting as a road underdog on December 14. Winnipeg holds a large +28 to +6 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator and “average up” versus “ice cold down” on the Team Strength Oscillator. Winnipeg has been hot lately and I see that trend continuing in a regulation win in this one.

Edmonton Oilers versus Arizona Coyotes

Neither team has been stellar, but the Coyotes have the worst record in the NHL. Edmonton won as a home favorite in their last meeting, although the Coyotes have a +4 to +3 edge on the Power Ranking Indicator. It’s hard to pick Arizona in any game and if they are the underdog, the pick goes to Edmonton since the Coyotes are tied for fourth in Team Volatility.
