The puck drops on the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs on April 11. This season has so far belonged to the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Nashville Predators. The ice hockey clubs have recorded 106 points and secured a playoff spot already.
As it stands, Tampa Bay will play the New Jersey Devils in the first round of the playoffs. Nashville is due for a date with the Anaheim Ducks. But with eight games to play, the current standings could still shift.
There have been two big surprises this NHL season. The first has been the unexpected winning season the Vegas Golden Knights have put together. Playing in their first NHL season, the Golden Knights have collected 100 points and a +47 goal difference. Vegas currently have the third best odds to win the Stanley Cup, which is unheard of. Vegas is +600 to lift the trophy. The team’s home record make it a hockey club no one will want to face in the first round of the playoffs. Currently 26-9-2 at home, Vegas will play the Colorado Avalanche in the first round of the playoffs.
The other big NHL surprise this season has been the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers were expected to contend for the Stanley Cup behind the play of reigning MVP Connor McDavid. However, the team’s poorly assembled and imbalanced team couldn’t get things going early in the season. Edmonton have 71 points, the fourth fewest in the Western Conference. For anyone that picked Edmonton to win the Stanley Cup ahead of the season, we are sorry.
With the NHL Playoffs starting in a few weeks, we used the ZCode System’s Playoff Simulator to give us a prediction of which team will win the Stanley Cup. The Maple Leafs will beat the Boston Bruins in the first round. Toronto’s regular season record is 3-1-0 against Boston, so don’t think the Maple Leafs can’t win a seven game series against their rivals. The Maple Leafs will then knock off the top seeded Lightning before beating the Columbus Blue Jackets to qualify for the Stanley Cup Finals. The Maple Leafs are currently +1400 to win the Stanley Cup.
Perhaps the biggest surprise is ZCode System’s Playoff Simulator has Toronto meeting Colorado in the finals. The Playoff Simulator predicts the Avalanche will go on a run and knockout the Predators, Minnesota Wild and Vegas Golden Knights. Colorado is currently +3300 to win the Stanley Cup.
