The NBA Playoffs tip off on April 14, and the Association’s second season will be the proving ground for both the Houston Rockets and the Toronto Raptors. The two NBA teams lead their respective conferences, which for many was completely unexpected when the season started in October.
Although both the Raptors and the Rockets lead the Eastern and Western Conferences, respectively, sportsbooks still don’t believe either will win the NBA Championship. The Golden State Warriors still lead NBA Championship future odds, however, with the Raptors close behind.
While the Warriors are still favorites to win the title and currently sit four games out of first place int the West, things haven’t gone quite so well for the Cleveland Cavaliers. When the Cavs made their dramatic roster moves ahead of the trade deadline, many believed the team of old would return. However, LeBron James and company haven’t been able to catch the Boston Celtics, or the East’s top team, the Raptors. Depending on the Cavs’ play in the final weeks of the season, Cleveland could realistically fall to fourth – or even fifth – in the Eastern Conference’s standings.
Based on the current NBA standings, if the playoffs began today, ZCode System’s Playoff Simulator predicts the Rockets to win the NBA Final. The simulator predicts the Raptors to win the Eastern Conference and a match up between the NBA’s top two regular season teams.
Interestingly, the Playoff Simulator predicts Golden State to lose in the first round of the playoffs against the Minnesota Timberwolves. That is a bold prediction as Minnesota has beaten Golden State just once in three attempts this season. The Timberwolves did win the last game between the two teams, but it will be difficult to hold back Steph Curry and company.
The prediction of the Rockets as NBA Champions isn’t quite as bold a move by the Playoff Simulator. Houston has been fantastic and has posted a 37-8 record against the Western Conference. The trade that brought Chris Paul to Houston, a move many were unsure would work, has made the Rockets the best team over the course of the regular season.
Can the Toronto Raptors win the Eastern Conference? The ZCode System’s Playoff Simulator believes so. The Playoff Simulator predicts the Raptors won’t come across either the Boston Celtics nor the Cavs. The Playoff Simulator believes both teams will be upset before they can meet the Raptors. It is hard to believe that could happen as Boston and Cleveland have been the standard bearers of the Eastern Conference. Yes, the Raptors can win the East, but they will most likely need to go through the Celtics or Cavs.
