NBA 2016-17 Complete Season Preview

West

1: Golden State Warriors 72-10

The Warriors were dominant last year breaking the Chicago Bulls’ record for most wins in a season. They, however, performed poorly by comparison in the playoffs where they narrowly beat the Thunder and then lost to the Cavs in the championship series. The Warriors have made a series of roster moves that stands to improve on what was arguably already the best all-around squad in the NBA. Harrison Barnes and Andrew Bogut are the most notable players they lost in free agency. However, the acquisition of superstar, Kevin Durant, outweighs the losses felt from Bogut and Barnes by a mile. I have the Warriors at 72 wins because I can’t bring myself to predict another record breaking season. However, I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if they didn’t lose a game this year.

2: San Antonio Spurs 62-20

The Spurs have lost a lot of key players this offseason including, most notably, Tim Duncan. However, the addition of Paul Gasol should even the lineup out a bit. I expect the Spurs to remain dominant in the West as they quietly booked 67 wins last year.

3: LA Clippers

The Clippers haven’t changed much over the offseason. They made no bold acquisitions or trades and didn’t pick up anyone worth talking about in the draft. With that said, Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, and DeAndre Jordan are still a powerhouse trio who will continue to be a force to be reckoned with. Expect a typical strong season from the Clippers and the chance of a deep-ish playoff run. However, the Warriors will still be the team to beat in the West and the Spurs remain strong.

4: Portland Trailblazers 49-33

The Trailblazers are a young developing team that performed better than anyone could have predicted in 2015. I don’t expect Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum to slow down in 2016 and there’s no reason to expect anything but improvement from Portland.

5: Dallas Mavericks 48 – 34

The Mavs are probably going to win my vote for most improved team this year. They’ve made some crucial free agency acquisitions, mostly from the Warriors, that should jumpstart what was an already talented roster. Look for Dirk, Barnes, and Bogut to be a dynamic threesome in the west.

6: OKC Thunder 40-42

The Thunder would have been my underdog pick to win the Western Conference Championships last year and they nearly took it from Golden State. Westbrook and KD were a dynamic force and the team felt unstoppable in the playoffs. However, the loss of KD to their conference rivals will impact the team in a number of ways. First, they will simply just not be as good. Durant is an impactful player whose void will be felt immensely this season. Second, losing Durant to the Thunder, a conference rival, will effect the team from a morale point of view. The Warriors are going to win games- possibly more games than they won last year. Watching the Warriors thrive with their new superstar will impact the team psychologically. I expect the Thunder to struggle this year despite having one of the best point guards in the game and an otherwise serviceable roster. Westbrook can’t win this on his own, though. I think they will make the playoffs, but narrowly.

7: Houston Rockets 42-40

After living in New Orleans for the last three years and now moving to Houston, I’m thrilled with the Rockets’ offseason acquisitions. Eric Gordon and Ryan Anderson were two of my favorite players to watch and I think they will be able to thrive on this team. Harden won’t feel as much pressure to get it done on his own. Hopefully well see a more balanced offense from the rockets with solid depth on their roster. I have them making the playoffs narrowly but won’t be shocked if they breach the top 4 in the west.

8: Memphis Grizzlies 45-37

The Grizzlies managed to make the playoffs last year despite and injury riddled roster. They have a roster full of veterans including the newly added Chandler Parsons. The Grizzlies are a solid team without a bona-fide superstar (unless you count Gasol…) who manage to get the job done. I expect them to finish above average, make the playoffs, and lose in the first round.

9: New Orleans Pelicans 40-42

The Pelicans spiraled downwards last year after making the playoffs with 45 wins in 2014. They managed only 30 wins in 2015, largely due to an injured Anthony Davis who missed a total of 21 games. The Pelicans arguably have little place to go but up from last year. However, after losing two key pieces to their roster in Eric Gordon and Ryan Anderson, I have tempered optimism. Expect a mediocre season and somewhere around a 9th place finish in the West for the Pels.

10: Utah Jazz 36-46

The Jazz are a defensive powerhouse who barely missed the playoffs last year after a mediocre season. There’s little to be excited about with concern to this team except for the fact that Dante Exum will be returning from his torn ACL injury that caused him to miss all of last season. Yet, I still have the Jazz regressing despite his return.

11: Minnesota Timberwolves 30-52

The Timberwolves are a young team with a lot of undeveloped talent. I can see them shattering my projected 30 wins for them, but they are too unproven for me to give them any more credit. Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins are potential superstars in the making and there’s no reason to believe that rookie, Kris Dunn, won’t have an impact on this team. However, I think the T-wolves are a year or two away from playoff pedigree.

12: Denver Nuggets 27-55

The Nuggets have a lineup riddled with mediocrity and absolutely no star power. They will continue to lose games in 2016 unless Malik Beasley turns out to be a superstar. This is a team with little going for it except for the consolation that they will probably be better than Phoenix, and Los Angeles.

13: Sacramento Kings 26- 54

The Kings have established a legacy in being terrible. Last years 33 win season was actually their best in almost 10 years. DeMarcus Cousins is a superstar but the rest of the team is pretty terrible. There’s no reason to expect a rebound from the Kings this year.

14: Phoenix Suns 23-59

The Suns have been in rebuild mode for years and have made little progress. The acquisition of Barbosa from Golden State is probably exciting for the die-hard fans in Arizona but will have little impact on the Suns’ ability to win games. Expect a fairly terrible season from the Suns once again.

15: LA Lakers  20-62

The lakers won 17 games WITH Kobe last year. Now he’s gone. They won’t win more than 20. 20 is actually probably fairly generous.

East

1: Cleveland Cavaliers 58-23

The Cavs won the East after going 57 and 25 in the regular season and ultimately went on to defeat the Warriors in one of the most exciting 7-game series of basketball that we have ever seen. Lebron showed the world that he can win championships wherever he goes but having Kyrie Irving doesn’t hurt. The Cavs should have no trouble finishing the regular season on top of the conference again in 2016 as the East is stacked with mediocrity. For the same reasons, we expect the Cavs to find their way to the NBA championships for the third year in a row- most likely against the Warriors. This sports fan will be rooting for them in what will certainly be an uphill battle. LeBron and Irving will bring another ring to Cleveland despite the massive amount of talent in Golden State coupled with the signing of Kevin Durant. It will be a series to watch and we can’t wait.

2: Chicago Bulls 55-27

The Bulls were a defensive powerhouse in the East but struggled to score when they had the ball. Jimmy Butler helped to fix some of those issues as he has risen to star-status in the last year. Now, the additions of Dwyane Wade, one of the best guards to ever play the game, has given Chicago the dynamic duo it has lacked- and one that can play well on both sides of the court. Forget about Noah and Rose. Butler and Wade are the future of Chicago and it looks bright.

3: Toronto Raptors 52-30

Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan are both coming off career best seasons in 2015 and are in their prime. They will lead the Raptors to a strong showing in the East and possibly a deep playoff run. The Raptors lost some key talent when Biyombo went to Orlando but Jonas Valancuinas is a solid center and is primed for an offensive breakout. The Raptors are a defensive powerhouse who are borderline unbeatable at home. Expect another strong season in 2016.

4: Atlanta Hawks 47-35

The Hawks have added Dwight Howard which could be a blessing or a curse depending on which Howard shows up to Atlanta. However, mixing Howard in with Paul Milsap will likely create one of the most potent big-man duos in the NBA. Howard also adds the superstar power that the Hawks have seemingly lacked the last few years- notably while still being a very efficient team. The team, however, is full of seasoned veterans who are on the downhill side of solid careers. If the Hawks are going to make a push for the championship then they’re going to have to do it soon. The problem is that there’s just too much talent elsewhere for them to be able to make that deep of a playoff push. Overall, the Hawks are a good team and you should expect a good season from them- but nothing more.

5: Indiana Pacers 47-35

The Pacers are primed for a big season in 2016. Paul George is a force on both sides of the ball and the Pacers have surrounded him with quality talent. The addition of Jeff Teague is noteworthy and he will have an immediate impact on this offense. However, Teague is no Kyrie Irving and history has shown that it typically takes two superstars to win a championship.

6:Charlotte Hornets 46-36

The Hornets are a team with no real glaring issues but also no glaring strengths either. They are a young team that shoots the ball slightly above average, but there’s nothing remarkable about them. They not ready to be a contender in this division which is loaded elsewhere with talent.

7:  Washington Wizards 44-38

John Wall is an incredible point guard who can pass and score. Bradley Beal is a deep threat knockdown shooter and both are surrounded by a sub-par set of big-men. Wall and Beal are a good duo but they’re not good enough to make up for the mediocrity that surrounds them. The Wizards will have an okay season and probably make the playoffs because the competition in the East has a steep drop-off after the top two or three teams. Outside of that, don’t expect much from this team.

8: Boston Celtics 43-39

This is a team full of budding talent and depth. Isaiah Thomas became an all-star his second year in Boston and guys like Marcus Smart and Jae Crowder are growing as well. Furthermore the addition of Al Horford is a serious upgrade for the Celtics. I expect this team to compete in the East and make the playoffs. I have them at 8th but I wouldn’t be surprised if they creep in a little bit higher.

9: New York Knicks 41-41

The Knicks have added start, Joacim Noah, to complement Carmelo Anthony and his underrated sidekick, Kristaps Porzingis. The Knicks have been bad for years despite talent. This year they will compete in the East and could potentially make the playoffs. I have them on the cusp at 9.

10: Miami Heat 40-42

The Heat made a surprisingly deep run in the playoffs last year after failing to make them in 2014. This year, the Heat have lost their two best players in Dwyane Wade and Luol Deng without adding much to replace them. Add the fact that Chris Bosh can hardly be relied upon to carry this team after his medical issues- furthermore it looks more and more like he may retire. Expect serious regression from the Heat this year. I have them at 9th in the East but I wouldn’t be surprised if they finish lower.

11: Detroit Pistons 35-47

The Pistons are a team that oozes mediocrity. They managed to squeeze their way into the playoffs last year with 44 wins despite not having a single player whose name would be recognizable to anyone not from Detroit- except Andre Drummond- I guess- now. There are plenty of teams that have improved this offseason and the Pistons probably shouldn’t have made the playoffs last year. Don’t expect it to happen in 2016.

12: Orlando Magic 32-50

This is a team full of above average big guys and starting guards who would probably be cut from other teams. This Magic team is rebuilding after losing all but 6 players on its roster this offseason. There is no reason to have anything but low expectations in Orlando as it will take nothing short of actual Magic for them to make the playoffs.

13: Milwaukee Bucks 32-50

The Bucks are a team characterized by excellent athleticism and above-average size. Jabari Parker and Giannis Antekounnpo are potential all-stars and are emerging forces in the league. Otherwise, the team lacks depth and ability in its guards. Michael Carter-Williams is not who we hoped he’d be and the addition of Dellavedova was a weak, but well intentioned, move. Overall, the Bucks are a sub-par team and will likely hover in the bottom half of the East.

14: Brooklyn Nets 20-62

The Nets may be the worst team in the NBA. There isn’t a single star unless you count Jeremy Lin. There is little depth and its hard to consider them a true developing team because the young players aren’t anything to be excited about. Overall, the Nets will probably be terrible and they should be terrible. However, something tells me Philadelphia will find a way to lose more games.

15: Philidelpia 76ers 16-66

The 76ers will continue to be terrible.
