MLB DAILY FANTASY BATTERS

My last article touched on a few key stats for finding a pitcher to use in your daily fantasy lineups. Today I’ll talk about a few key batting stats to look at when choosing DFS hitters.  Obviously, these are just a few of the basics but a good place to start.

wOBA: Weighted On Base Average. Once again, wOBA makes a list of key stats. This is probably the most comprehensive stat for determining a player’s offensive value. As with all of the hitter stats, remember to look at the player’s stats for the pitching split he is facing that day.

ISO: Isolated Power. ISO shows how many extra bases a player averages per at bat. Targeting players with high ISO splits is a great way to maximize your score and it can also serve as a tie breaker if debating between two players.

BABIP: Batting Average on Balls In Play. This stat shows the batting average for just the balls a hitter has managed to put in play (not counting home runs). The average BABIP over the last five seasons is around .297. This can be a good way to find value as a low BABIP can be caused by bad luck (hitting a line drive right at someone etc) and a high BABIP might just be a hitter catching a few good bounces. Ultimately it will regress back to the player’s mean and finding a traditionally good hitter with a low BABIP is a way to save money on your roster.

HR/FB: Home Run to Fly Ball Rate. This is another stat that can help find value when comparing a player’s current season to his historical rates. Similar to BABIP, if a player’s HR/FB is much less than his historical rates, he might be available at a discounted price and due for a power surge. And a player who has a much higher rate than their historical stats might be over priced and headed for a down swing.

SB/G: Stolen Bases per Game. Stolen bases are often overlooked as a great way to find value on your DFS roster.  Finding a cheap batter with the potential to steal a base is a great way to maximize value in your lineup.

As always, these stats are just a starting point. But by looking at a batter’s stats for the pitching split he is facing that day and drilling down to find value, scoring big numbers in DFS is possible. And just like with the pitchers, comparing your lineup with ZCode’s Optimal Lineup Generator Tool will help find extra value and low owned bats:
