The world’s No. 1 soccer league is back for another year of high-energy action as the English Premier League kicks off Friday night. Arsenal will host Leicester City in the league’s opening match before nine other matches take place over the weekend. Let’s take a look at the biggest English Premier League teams and their week 1 matches.
English Premier League week 1
Arsenal vs. Leicester
Arsenal go into the season opener at -200. The Gunners have had a good offseason signing goal scorer Alexandre Lacazette from French team Lyon. Arsenal has already won the FA Community Shield and looked very good in that fixture against Chelsea. Early betting has gone Arsenal’s direction.
Leicester doesn’t look quite as promising this season, but the team did make an excellent summer transfer signing in Kelechi Iheanacho from Manchester City. Leicester isn’t the team it was two seasons ago when it shocked everyone and won the Premier League; but the team will give Arsenal some trouble. Expect the Gunners to win this, however. This fixture should be close with Arsenal pulling away in the second half.
Watford vs. Liverpool
Liverpool come into this fixture as -175 favorites despite rumors of the Reds losing star player Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona. Despite the constant rumors, Liverpool should win this fixture as Watford is expected to finish near the bottom of the league table.
ZCode System’s scores predictor has Liverpool winning 3-0 on Saturday and I must agree. The Reds have a very high-powered attack, and Watford will have few answers in defense.
Chelsea vs. Burnley
Last year’s champions, Chelsea, host Burnley on Saturday and go into the fixture as -400 favorites. Although Chelsea doesn’t look as strong as it could due to injuries to key players, the Blues should manhandle Burnley.
Burnley has just sold one of its top players in DeAndre Grey. Questions are being asked about the club’s ambitions, and many believe Burnley will finish in the relegation zone come May. ZCode System’s scores predictor believes Chelsea will win this match 3-0, and that seems fair.
Brighton vs. Manchester City
Manchester City is being tipped as the Premier League champions in waiting. The club spent heavily in the summer to upgrade its starting XI, and anything less than a title will be a major disappointment.
Brighton has just been promoted from the English Championship, so the team getting win from this match is hopeful thinking. Manchester City should dominate Brighton throughout the 90 minutes. The moneyline reversal agrees with wagers going on City to win.
Manchester United vs. West Ham
Manchester United hasn’t lost in 27 of its last 29 Premier League home matches, and West Ham is in an unlikely position of picking up a win at Old Trafford on Sunday. Manchester United has improved its squad this summer with the signing of striker Romelu Lukaku. He finished second in goal scoring last season. Expect Lukaku to score, or at least set up a goal, and Manchester United to win.
Despite Manchester United ranking at 132 in the ZCode System’s power rankings, the club will be difficult to be Sunday and in most weeks thereafter in the English Premier League.
