Champions League matchday 2: Can’t-miss games!

Tuesday night the action kicks off with big clubs facing off in Manchester. English Premier League team Manchester United host Spain’s Valencia in a must-win game for the Red Devils. Despite winning on matchday 1, Manchester United is melting down from the inside. Manager Jose Mourinho has seen his team go winless in its last three matches. Most recently, Manchester United was outplayed by West Ham on Saturday. The Red Devils lost 3-1 and reports of Mourinho getting fired are rife in the United Kingdom.

Valencia won over the weekend, but the team isn’t as strong as it was this time a year ago. Valencia lost its matchday 1 fixture to a very strong Juventus team, 2-0. The Spanish team has won just once this season while scoring five goals in La Liga. Los Che will struggle away at Old Trafford and things will appear better — briefly — for Manchester United.

Germany’s Bayern Munich will host the Netherlands’ Ajax at the Allianz Arena. Both won on matchday 1 and this fixture should be exciting from the first whistle. Bayern was beaten at the weekend by Hertha Berlin, 2-0. The Germans struggled to break down Hertha and create goals. Defensively the reigning Bundesliga champions were vulnerable. Playing at home should improve Bayern’s play, but Ajax could pull off an upset in Germany.

Lyon shocked Manchester City (the team most insiders have predicted will win the Champions League) on matchday 1. Lyon picked Manchester City apart on the counter-attack, winning 2-1. Lyon can solidify its grip on Group F with a win against Shakhtar Donetsk. The Ukrainian team drew 2-2 with Hoffenheim on matchday 1. Lyon is undefeated in its last five games in all competitions.

On Wednesday night, Champions League matchday 2 continues. The headliner of the night will be English club Tottenham hosting Spain’s Barcelona. Tottenham threw away a 1-0 lead against Inter Milan on matchday 1, losing 2-1. Since the loss, Tottenham has improved winning three straight games in all competitions.

Barcelona throttled PSV Eindhoven 4-0 on matchday 1, however, the scoreline flattered the Spanish club. Since the win, Barcelona has been in terrible form in La Liga. Barcelona is winless in its last three matches. The team lost to La Liga’s bottom team Leganes last week before drawing at the weekend with Athletic Bilbao. The latter saw the team struggle and only draw level in the last six minutes of the game. Anything can happen on Wednesday night between Tottenham and Barcelona.

Liverpool travels to Napoli for matchday 2. The Reds defeated Paris Saint-Germain in what was widely praised as the most exciting match of matchday 1. Liverpool is playing great soccer and sit joint-top of the Premier League. Napoli drew with Red Star Belgrade in a nil-nil bore draw. Will Napoli be able to hold Liverpool’s attack or will the Reds have an eye on the weekend’s big domestic match with Manchester City?
