NHL Predictions 2013-14, Metropolitan Division: New York Rangers or Pittsburgh Penguins?

NHL PREDICTIONS, 2013-14 SEASON PREVIEW: Metropolitan Division

The NHL season returns to us this week, so we thought we’d throw some season previews  and predictions your way. My favorite division after the shuffle is definitely the Metropolitan Division. It’s comprised of eight teams that could conceivably be playoff contenders, that now must battle through each other to try to make the postseason.

As a Devils fan, I hate the new system and hate this new division. It’s absolutely loaded. Nevertheless, this is definitely the most fun division for me to break down. Might as well start out the season having  ...

NHL Playoffs Picks and Predictions: Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Islanders

NHL Playoffs Picks and Predictions: Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Islanders

The Pittsburgh Penguins made a gutsy move to sit their franchise goaltender in favor of a veteran that was run out of the last two teams he played for.

As a backup, Vokoun was mediocre, but the Penguins needed a spark. He shut out a scrappy Islanders team and put the Penguins in position to close out the series. Back in net for the second game in a row, I think the Penguins and Vokoun will get that goal accomplished.

We have a heavy line for our series bet,  ...

NHL Picks and Predictions: Pittsburgh Penguins at Toronto Maple Leafs

NHL Featured Game: Pittsburgh Penguins at Toronto Maple Leafs

I think I received the biggest compliment of my career when someone asked earlier this week “do you guys post your picks before or after the game?”. I guess I’ve been doing pretty well lately.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are without their second best scorer in Evgeni Malkin. THe Toronto Maple Leafs have been without their second best scorer all year in Joffrey Lupul. Both teams are in the playoff hunt – the Pens are underachieving while the Leafs are blowing away lukewarm expectations.

With two skilled goaltenders in the midst of  ...

NHL Picks and Predictions: Penguins at Jets

NHL Picks and Predictions – Pittsburgh Penguins at Winnipeg Jets

Don’t expect the same immaculate prediction as yesterday, where we nailed everything from the flow of the game to the final score. Still, we’ll try our best! It’s been an incredible start to the hockey season for the VIP Club, and expert forums are in profit and humming along. In today’s feature game, we pick a road favorite that could be a trap line, but the value is too much to pass on.

Early line reversal money movements show a reversal against the Penguins. As expected, the trap is being  ...

NHL Power Rankings: Chicago Blackhawks Running Away from the Pack

With only one game of hockey, we thought it was a good time to feature our NHL power rankings by Mark. We’re on the Ducks in that game, but still waiting for Z-Code analysis to confirm our pick.

1. Chicago Blackhawks – At 9-0-2, this team looks unstoppable. How can they not be #1?

2. Pittsburgh Penguins – The Pens are the best team in the East and have the most weapons. How will they blow a Stanley Cup run this year?

3. New Jersey Devils – Save for one game, the Devils are on fire. With cleaner play, this is one of the best teams in hockey.

4. Boston Bruins – Tim Thomas just got traded to the New York Islanders, but it’s Rask’s team now.

5. Anaheim Ducks – Both goalies are playing well, but this offense is out of this world.

6. San Jose Sharks – After a hot start, the Sharks have fallen off a bit lately.  ...

NHL Picks and Predictions: Toronto Maple Leafs at Pittsburgh Penguins

NHL Featured Hockey Game, Wednesday, January 23 – Toronto Maple Leafs at Pittsburgh Penguins

I don’t usually fall in love with -200 lines, but today is a beauty.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are the best team in hockey right now. They have three of the best forwards in the NHL in James Neal, Sidney Crosby, and Evgeni Malkin. They have a talented goalie in Marc-Andre Fleury. The Penguins are coached well, consistent, and perennial contenders. They’re hot to start the year and there’s a little bit of value even in this ugly line.

The Leafs goaltending has been in shambles since James  ...

NHL Preseason Picks and Predictions: Hockey’s Playoff Teams 2013

The NHL season is finally upon us, which means we get to finally outline predictions for the upcoming hockey season.  We’ll do each conference, and predict which teams will make the playoffs.  Last year, Z-Code was one of the only professional prediction services to have the Devils making the Stanley Cup Final.  Let’s see if we can do it again this year:

Western Conference:

1. Vancouver Canucks:  How do you bet against these guys?  They return a stud goaltender and some of the best scorers in hockey.  They have a two-way team that can dominate a game.  The Canucks will be great again.

2. St. Louis Blues:  The Blues have the best goaltending tandem in hockey.  This team is built for another playoff run.

3. LA Kings:  In the worst division in hockey, the Kings should be able to win the division this year.  They made a Stanley Cup run last year as an 8th seed, but they won’t sneak  ...

Free Pick of the day by Ron

The All Star break is over, and it was a pretty theatrical and annoying one at that. We are back in action tonight with one of the largest lineups of the season. Unfortunately no one will be wearing a cape.

The million dollar question in the air is how will teams be affected by the break?

Lucky for us we only choose one game to work with, so we only need to worry about this effect on a single game basis. The last fact we all encountered were the Red Wings crawling into a deep sleep just before the break.  ...
