NHL Playoffs First Round Picks and Predictions 2014

Atlantic Division

Boston Bruins vs  WC 2 Detroit Red Wings Few teams have the depth of the Boston Bruins, which lends to their stability every season and particularly each postseason.  They are anchored in goaltending and have sufficient defensive depth to make another great playoff run.  The Detroit Red Wings have done a remarkable job this year battling injuries, but they’re simply inferior to the Boston Bruins.  You can never right off a team like Detroit that fought so hard this season, but this series is Boston’s to lose.

Bruins in five

Tampa Bay Lightning vs 3. Montreal Canadiens I like Ryan Callahan.  For a while, he was the only New York Rangers player I could respect.  Putting him on a team with Steven Stamkos makes the Lightning very exciting for me.  Ben Bishop is a big, talented goalie.  Still, this is a very difficult series to predict.  Carey Price is capable of taking over a game, and the Habs  ...

NHL Picks Competition Round 12: Detroit Red Wings at Philadelphia Flyers

NHL Picks Contest Round 12 ($100 Prize): Detroit Red Wings at Philadelphia Flyers, January 28th

The Flyers have surged into playoff relevance with some inspired play of late, though it appears their energy burst may be running out of fuel. On home ice, they host a disappointing Detroit Red Wings team that hasn’t found much consistency this year. Still, the Wings have talent to beat anyone and this is a tremendously important game as we turn towards the stretch run…

NHL Picks – Winter Classic Predictions: Toronto Maple Leafs at Detroit Red Wings

NHL Picks: Winter Classic Predictions – Toronto Maple Leafs at Detroit Red Wings

Ah, some good ol’ fashioned pond hockey on New Year’s Day. Does it get any better? Maybe slightly better, if the teams were having better years. Either way, this should be a dandy.

Two of the most inconsistent teams in hockey play an outdoor game in front of a national audience. The quality of the ice is tricky, the game tends to be a little sloppy, and the nostalgia is full blown. This should be a fun contest between two Original Six franchises.

The Red Wings have  ...

NHL Picks: Detroit Red Wings at Nashville Predators

NHL Picks: Detroit Red Wings at Nashville Predators

The Detroit Red Wings have been one of the most volatile teams in hockey this year. They lose to teams they should beat, they beat teams they should lose to. It’s tough to trust the Wings right now.

That said, they’re heating up. The Wings have played better in their last few games. Meanwhile, though they pulled off a surprising upset in their last game, the Nashville Predators are really struggling. They don’t have weapons offensively and without Pekka Rinne they’ve been inconsistent defensively.

I think the Red Wings, though they’re on  ...

NHL Playoffs Picks and Predictions: Detroit Red Wings at Chicago Blackhawks Game Seven

NHL Playoffs Picks and Predictions: Chicago Blackhawks Vs Detroit Red Wings

So here is the deal:

We had a tremendously profitable second round. We hedged out of Sharks with guaranteed profits. We CRUSHED the Penguins series and the Bruins series. We are up big, sitting very pretty, with my favorite series of the postseason on the line. This also has the potential to be my most profitable series of the playoffs… despite it going seven games… because we predicted it going seven games and bet accordingly, recognizing how great the Red Wings are at home but needing a  ...

NHL Playoffs Picks and Predictions: Chicago Blackhawks Detroit Red Wings Game Six

NHL Playoffs Picks and Predictions: Game Six – Chicago Blackhawks at Detroit Red Wings

After a perfect prediction last night on the Kings and Sharks, I’m not sure where we go from here. We hit the 96% recommended +1.5 line, we hit the Sharks ML, we hit the under, and we got the 2-1 score exactly right in our prediction below. A truly perfect pick.

This game looks a bit more volatile, and Z-Code is nowhere near as friendly with its prediction.

NHL Playoffs Picks, Predictions: Chicago Blackhawks at Detroit Red Wings

The Blackhawks came out flat in Game Two and the Red Wings capitalized. In one of our most polarizing predictions of the playoffs (see posts below), Game Three could give a team a big edge.

I still think the Blackhawks are the better team, and one game doesn’t change my mind about that. I still think this series will be a grind, and had it going seven games. I still think the Blackhawks have too much chemistry and too much depth. I love the two-way players on this roster and think they can shut down an aging Red Wings team.

That  ...

NHL Picks, Predictions: Detroit Red Wings at LA Kings

NHL Featured Game – Hockey Picks: Detroit Red Wings at LA Kings

For me, this game comes down to the tremendous goaltending edge the Red Wings have against Jonathan Bernier. Jimmy Howard can be one of the best in hockey, and the backup goaltender for the Kings faces a deep and talented top six for the Detroit Red Wings. He will need to play his best game to keep pace with Howard.

THe Kings offense isn’t all that overpowering, and I think the Red Wings can shut them down. I don’t, however, see the Kings completely shutting down a suddenly-hot  ...

NHL Preseason Picks and Predictions: Hockey’s Playoff Teams 2013

The NHL season is finally upon us, which means we get to finally outline predictions for the upcoming hockey season.  We’ll do each conference, and predict which teams will make the playoffs.  Last year, Z-Code was one of the only professional prediction services to have the Devils making the Stanley Cup Final.  Let’s see if we can do it again this year:

Western Conference:

1. Vancouver Canucks:  How do you bet against these guys?  They return a stud goaltender and some of the best scorers in hockey.  They have a two-way team that can dominate a game.  The Canucks will be great again.

2. St. Louis Blues:  The Blues have the best goaltending tandem in hockey.  This team is built for another playoff run.

3. LA Kings:  In the worst division in hockey, the Kings should be able to win the division this year.  They made a Stanley Cup run last year as an 8th seed, but they won’t sneak  ...
