NHL Predictions March 1: Nashville at Winnipeg featured game

The NHL season is entering the final push as the calendar turns to March. There are several games scheduled for Friday, March 1, but Nashville versus Winnipeg tops the list. Note that all information is for games played through February 26.

Philadelphia Flyers versus New Jersey Devils

The Flyers are 13-14-3 on the road and 6-3-1 over their last ten games. They head into the games in 6th in the Metropolitan Division. New Jersey is last in the division, but are 17-10-5 at home. Philadelphia holds a +12 to +4 edge on the Power Ranking Indicator, while both teams are “average up” on the Team Strength Oscillator. Both teams are relatively stable, according to the Team Volatility Oscillator. the Devils are 2-1 in head-to-head play this season.  The pick is for the Flyers to win in a tight game, perhaps in overtime.

Pittsburgh Penguins versus Buffalo Sabres

The Penguins are fifth in the Metropolitan Division and are 15-10-6 on the road. Buffalo is 5th in the Atlantic Division and post a 18-9-4 record at home. Neither team is trending well lately, at “average down” and “dead” on the Team Strength Oscillator. Pittsburgh is not extremely stable, so take their favorite/underdog status lightly when considering this game. Buffalo had won two of the three games between the teams this season and although down +20 to +13 on the Power Ranking Indicator, should come away with a win in this one.

St. Louis Blues versus Carolina Hurricanes

St. Louis is third in the Central Division and are 17-10-4 on the road. They are 8-1-1 over their last ten and won the first meeting between the teams this season. Carolina is 16-10-4 at home and are “burning hot”. The Blues have a narrow +20 to +19 edge on the Power Ranking Indicator. Take note that St. Louis is among the most unstable teams in the league at -7 on the Team Volatility Oscillator.  They will be the road underdog and because of their unstable nature, that doesn’t mean much. Let’s go with the Blues in a road upset win.

Nashville Predators versus Winnipeg Jets

In the featured game of the day, two second place teams face off. The Predators are 17-12-2 on the road and 6-3-1 over their last ten. Winnipeg is 21-7-4 at home, but have struggled recently, going 3-5-2 over their last ten. Nashville has a +21 to +20 edge on the Power Ranking Indicator and “average up” versus “ice cold down” status. Both teams are above the league average in stability. The teams have been evenly matched, splitting the first two games of the season. Look for the Jets to get back on track with a hard fought win at home.

Colorado Avalanche versus San Jose Sharks

Colorado enters play with a 15-12-6 road record and 5-2-3 over their last ten. They face a San Jose team that is second in the Pacific Division and 7-2-1 over their last ten. The Sharks have a +27 to +22 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator, while both teams are “average” on the Team Strength Oscillator. The Avalanche are one of the more unstable teams in the league and the Sharks won the only meeting between the teams this season. The pick is for the Sharks to come away with a home win to keep the pressure on Calgary in the division.
