NHL Predictions February 22: Winnipeg versus Vegas featured game

The NHL season is in the home stretch and teams play hard for final playoff positioning. There are five games on tap for Friday, February 23. The featured game is the Winnipeg Jets versus the Vegas Golden Knights. Note that all information is for games played through February 18.

Columbus Blue Jackets versus Ottawa Senators

The Blue Jackets won the first meeting between the teams by a 6-3 score. They are third in the Metropolitan Division and are 18-9-1 on the road. Ottawa is last in the Atlantic Division and are 14-12-4 at home.  Both teams aren’t playing particularly great lately, and Columbus is “average down” on the Team Strength Oscillator versus “average” for Ottawa. Columbus has a +24 to +3 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator. All signs point towards an easy win for the Blue Jackets.

Minnesota Wild versus Detroit Red Wings

Minnesota has lost their last four, contributing to their “dead” status on the Team Strength Oscillator. They are 13-12-5 on the road and fifth in the Central Division. Detroit has lost two straight and are “ice cold down”. At seventh in the Atlantic Division, the Red Wings are 12-14-4 at home. They won the only meeting between the teams this season, although the Wild have a +7 to +4 edge on the Power Ranking Indicator. Detroit is likely going to be a home favorite, but in a bit of an upset, I see the Wild ending their losing streak, perhaps needing overtime to do so.

Colorado Avalanche versus Chicago Blackhawks

This Central Division match up features the 6th place Avalanche at 13-12-6 on the road versus the seventh place Blackhawks, who are 14-11-6 at home. Chicago has won both meetings between the teams this season. They are 8-2 over their last ten, “average up” on the Team Strength Oscillator and +10 on the Power Ranking Indicator. Colorado is just 2-5-3 over their last ten, “ice cold up” and +4. The Blackhawks will be a home favorite and are the much hotter team at the moment. They will win the game and move out of the basement in the division.

Anaheim Ducks versus Calgary Flames

The Flames come in with the best record on the Western Conference. They are 18-3-5 at home and 5-3-2 over their last ten games. Anaheim is sixth in the Pacific, 11-18-1 on the road and just 2-8 over their last ten. The Flames have a decided advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator (+25 to +1) and trending better on the Team Strength Oscillator (average up versus ice cold up). There is little to indicate the Ducks can come away with a win. Look for the Flames to win by two or three goals.

Winnipeg Jets versus Vegas Golden Knights

The Central Division leaders enter Vegas with a two game losing streak. They are 15-12 -0 on the road and have won the only meeting between the teams this season. Vegas is third in the Pacific Division and have struggled to 3-7 over their last ten. They are a solid 17-9-3 at home. Both teams are “ice cold down” on the Team Strength Oscillator, while the Jets have a narrow +22 to +20 edge on the Power Ranking Indicator.  Vegas has the edge playing at home, which is the deciding factor in this one. Look for Vegas to come away with a win, extending Winnipeg’s losing streak.
