NHL Playoffs Predictions: Round 2

With the first round of the NHL Playoffs in there books, here’s what’s in store for round 2.  Who has what it takes to make the conference finals?

Pittsburgh Penguins versus Washington Capitals

The Penguins entering defeating Philadelphia in six, while the Capitals took care of Columbus, also in six. Washington holds a +25 to +20 edge on the Power Ranking Indicator and “burning hot” versus “average” on the Team Strength Oscillator. The teams split the four meetings this season. Pittsburgh is tied for fifth in Team Volatility and likely the underdog in all meetings on the road bodes well for Washington. In a hard fought series, I see the Capitals winning in seven.

San Jose Sharks versus Vegas Golden Knights

San Jose dismantled Anaheim in four, while Vegas also pulled off a sweep over Los Angeles. Both teams enter “burning hot” and the Golden Knights have a slim +29 to +27 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator. They also took three of the four games between the teams this season. This series will be far from a sweep, as both teams are at the top of their games. Give the Knights the edge with the home ice and a victory in six to advance to the conference finals.

Winnipeg Jets versus Nashville Predators

The Jets enter winning in five over Minnesota in round one, while the Predators took down the Colorado Avalanche in six. Winnipeg in on top on the Power Ranking Indicator at +30, while the Predators are at +25. The Jets are “burning hot” on the Team Strength Oscillator versus “average” for Nashville. Despite some advantages according to the oscillators, Nashville took three of five during the regular season and are tied for fifth in Team Volatility. Nashville should be able to take care of business this series, but will take all seven to do so.

Boston Bruins versus Tampa Bay Lightning

Tampa Bay won in five in the opening round and should be well rested versus a Bruins team that needed seven to oust the Maple Leafs. The teams are nearly even on the oscillators, Boston at +24 on the Power Ranking Indicator versus +25 for the Lightning. Similarly, the Bruins have “average down” status versus “average up” for Tampa Bay.  It appears that Bruins have the Lightning’s number, having won three of four this season. That could be the difference in an otherwise even match up. Look for Boston to win in six.
