NHL Picks October 18: Carolina versus Anaheim featured matchup

The NHL season is now in full swing as we enter the second half of October. There are several games scheduled for Friday, October 18 with the Carolina Hurricanes and Anaheim Ducks headlining play.

Carolina Hurricanes versus Anaheim Ducks

The Hurricanes are off to a great start, first in the Metropolitan Division. They head to Anaheim to take on the Ducks, who are third in the Pacific Division. The teams split the two meetings last season. Carolina has a +30 to +25 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator. The Ducks are “burning hot” and the Hurricanes “burning hot down” on the Team Strength Oscillators. Both teams are playing in games trending “under” the line, which is a good bet for this one. According to the Team Volatility Oscillator, both teams are very stable, indicating they perform consistently according to their favorite/underdog status. In a tight game, perhaps going to overtime, look for the Ducks to prevail.

Dallas Stars versus Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh comes in with the second-best record in the Metropolitan Divison and host the Stars, sixth in the Central Division. The Penguins have a +18 to +3 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator and “burning hot” versus “dead” on the Team Strength Oscillator. Expect a low scoring game since both teams have been playing games trending “under” on the Totals Predictor. Last season the Penguins took both meetings between the teams. Be careful when considering the favorite/underdog status of the Stars since they are -1 on the Team Volatility Oscillator. There is little pointing towards an upset here, so pick the Penguins to win rather easily.

Columbus Blue Jackets versus Chicago Blackhawks

Both teams need something to go right to change their current trends. Columbus is seventh in the Metropolitan Divison and Chicago is fifth in the Central Division. The Blue Jackets are +3 on the Power Ranking Indicator and “ice cold up” status and the Blackhawks are 0 and “dead”. Avoid the over/under pick in this game since the teams are trending on opposite sides of the line. Neither team is particularly stable either, so the favorite/underdog status plays little into picking this one. The teams split the two meetings last season. Give a slight edge to Chicago with a -1 scoring differential compared to -7 for Columbus.

Detroit Red Wings versus Edmonton Oilers

Edmonton enters with the best record in the Pacific Division. They are +30 on the Power Ranking Indicator and “burning hot” on the Team Strength Oscillator. The Red Wings are fourth in the Atlantic Division, +22 on the Power Ranking Indicator and “average down”. Expect a high scoring game with both teams trending “over” the line.  Be wary of considering the Red Wings favorite/underdog status since they are a relatively unstable -2 on the Team Volatility Oscillator. The teams split the games between the teams last season. Edmonton is on fire and expect that to continue in this one.

Colorado Avalanche versus Florida Panthers

The Avalanche take their Central Divison leading record on the road to take on the Panthers, who are sixth in the Atlantic Division. Colorado is “burning hot” and +29 on the Power Ranking Indicator, while the Panthers are “ice cold down” and +8. According to the Totals Predictor, betting the “over” is the safe bet. The Avalanche are one of the most stable teams in the league at the moment and should be road favorites. The teams each won a game in last season’s head-to-head play. Colorado will lose eventually, but it won’t be in this one.
