NHL Picks October 12: Calgary versus Vegas highlight Saturday’s action

The NHL season is again underway and there is a full slate of games on tap for Saturday, October 12. We’ll examine some of these matchups with Calgary and Vegas headlining play.

Calgary Flames versus Vegas Golden Knights

Two Pacific Division teams battle as the Flames head to Vegas to take on the Golden Knights. Calgary is 1-1-1, are “ice cold down” on the Team Strength Oscillator and +7 on the Power Ranking Indicator. Vegas is “burning hot” after a 2-1 start and are +25 on the Power Ranking Indicator. Both teams have been playing in games trending under the line according to the Totals Predictor. Also, both teams have been showing early stability at +1 on the Team Volatility Oscillator. Calgary took three of five meetings between the teams last season. Look for Vegas to get an early lead this season, winning at home.

Edmonton Oilers versus New York Rangers

The Oilers are off to a 3-0 start and are +23 on the Power Ranking Indicator. They hit the road to take on the 2-0 Rangers of the Metropolitan Division. New York is +21 on the Power Ranking Indicator and both teams have “average” status. The teams have been involved in early high scoring games, so betting the over is a wise choice in this one. New York has shown early stability according to the Team Volatility Oscillator. Edmonton won both meetings last season and look for their early hot streak to continue in a win on the road.

New Jersey Devils versus Boston Bruins

Boston is off to a 3-0 start and is “burning hot” on the Team Strength Oscillator. They have a +24 to +10 advantage over the Devils on the Power Ranking Indicator. New Jersey is off to an 0-1-1 start with “average” status. Best to avoid the over/under in this one since the teams are trending on opposite sides of the line. The Devils have been unstable early on at -1 on the Team Volatility Oscillator, therefore take their favorite/underdog status with caution. Boston won three of five between the teams last season. There’s little to indicate the Devils will pull the road upset. Go with the Bruins to continue their hot streak.

Toronto Maple Leafs versus Detroit Red Wings

In this Atlantic Division battle, the Maple Leafs take their 2-1-1 record into Detroit to battle the 2-1 Red Wings. Detroit has a +27 to +25 edge on the Power Ranking Indicator, while the Maples Leafs are “burning hot” on the Team Strength Oscillator versus “ice cold down”. Neither team has shown early stability, in fact the Red Wings are among the most unstable at -2 on the Team Volatility Oscillator. It would be wise to pass on the over/under with teams trending on opposite sides of the line. Toronto took three of five between the teams last season and I am feeling a road upset in the making, perhaps in overtime.

Philadelphia Flyers versus Vancouver Canucks

Philadelphia has won their lone game of the season and face an 0-2 Vancouver team on the road. Both teams are trending poorly at +8 to +2 in favor of Vancouver on the Power Ranking Indicator. On the Team Strength Oscillator, the teams are faring poorly as well, at “ice cold down” for the Canucks and “ice cold up” for the Flyers. Vancouver has been moderately stable early on. The teams split the series last season a game apiece. Vancouver has scored only two goals this season and I see those troubles continuing. Because of that, go with the Flyers in a road win.
