NHL Picks February 14: Montreal at Pittsburgh headlines action

Entering the home stretch of the NHL season and there are still many teams in the playoff hunt. There are only four games scheduled for Friday, February 14 with the Canadiens and Penguins the featured matchup. Happy Valentine’s day ❤️

Montreal Canadiens versus Pittsburgh Penguins

The Canadiens enter play in fifth place in the Atlantic Division. They take their 14-9-3 road record to Pittsburgh to face the Metropolitan Division’s second-place team. The Penguins are 19-5-4 at home and have a +24 to +16 advantage over Montreal on the Power Ranking Indicator. Neither team has been stellar lately, as their “average” and “average up” statuses on the Team Strength Oscillator indicates. Best to avoid the “over/under” in this one since the teams are trending on opposite sides of the line according to the Totals Predictor. Be cautious when considering the favorite/underdog status of Montreal because they have been performing inconsistently as indicated on the Team Volatility Oscillator.  The teams have split the two meetings so far this season, both winning on the road.  Look for the Penguins to get the first home win between the teams this season.

New York Rangers versus Columbus Blue Jackets

Although having a solid 12-11-2 road record, at seventh in the Metropolitan Division, the Rangers are going nowhere this season. They take on the Blue Jackets, who are fourth in the same division and are a very good 18-10-3 at home. The teams have split the two meetings so far this season, both losing at home. Columbus has a +24 to +5 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator. Neither team has been playing their best hockey with statuses of “average up” and “average down”. Expect a lower scoring game since the Totals Predictor indicates both teams are playing in games trending below the line. The Rangers have been relatively unstable according to the Team Volatility Oscillator, while Columbus has been moderately stable at +7. There is little to indicate the Rangers can pull off a road upset, so go with the Blue Jackets by two goals.

San Jose Sharks versus Winnipeg Jets

Winnipeg enters their home game against San Jose with the fourth-best record in the Central Division. They are 14-13-3 at home and the Sharks, who are seventh in the Pacific Division, are 10-14-3 on the road. Winnipeg has taken both games between the teams this season on the road by scores of 5-1 and 3-2. They hold a +15 to +11 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator and “burning hot” versus “average down” on the Team Strength Oscillator. This is a game to avoid betting the over/under, according to the Totals Predictor. Take a good look at the favorite/underdog status for the Jets since they are performing consistently at +7 on the Team Volatility Oscillator. The Jets dominance over the Sharks should continue in a relatively easy win

New Jersey Devils versus Carolina Hurricanes

Little has gone right in New Jersey this season, as the Devils are bringing up the rear in the Metropolitan Division. They are a 12-15-0 road record into Carolina to battle the sixth-place Hurricanes, sporting an impressive 18-9-1 home record. Despite the poor season, the Devils won the first meeting between the teams this season by a 5-3 score. Carolina has a decided +20 to + 5 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator, while both teams are “burning hot” at the moment. The Totals Predictor indicates it’s best to avoid betting the “over/under” in this one. As for stability, both teams are performing fairly consistently according to their favorite/underdog status. Putting it all together, it looks like Carolina should win in rather easy fashion.
