NFL Preseason Week 3 Roundup Part 2: Patriots, Panthers, Bills, Redskins, Steelers, Saints

Week three of the NFL preseason is considered the dress rehearsal for week 1 and coaches typically let their starters play most if not all of the first half. This article is a roundup of the good things and the bad things we saw from this weekend’s games.

Patriots vs. Panthers

Tom Brady looked great in his opening drive though he only finished the game 3-9 and a touchdown. Those three completions, however, averaged 25 yards each. Lagarrette Blount bruised his way into a solid preseason stat line with 5 carries for 26 yards. He figures to be the primary back in New England- though trying to predict Bellechick’s RB usage is typically pointless.
Cam Newton, however, was less than spectacular completing 13 of 29 passes for 100 yards and 2 interceptions. I’ve been telling anyone who’s willing to listen that Cam Newton won’t come anywhere close to repeating his miracle 2015 performance. Despite the fact that the Panthers have even more offensive weapons in a healthy Kelvin Benjamin and a more developed Devin Funchess (who looked great with 5 receptions for 49 yards), my prediction seems to be taking hold. There is, however, a lot more football to be played.
All in all, the Pats played well but gave us only a small glimpse at their first team offense. On the other hand, Carolina’s starters played much more of this game but failed to produce.

Bills vs. Redskins

The Bills are clearly easing their projected starting QB, Tyrod Taylor, back into action after his season ending injury in 2015. He completed 2 of 5 passes for 11 yards and rushed once for 5 more. EJ Manuel, however, had a productive yet inefficient night completing 21 of 39 for 221 and an interception. There’s little else to say about the Bills as the game was predominately played by the second team- a second team that held its own against the first team of the Washington Redskins. Kicker, Dan Carpenter, was arguably the star of the Bills offense with three for three field goal attempts including one 52 harder.
Fantasy Football darlings Kirk Cousins and Jordan Reed connected for a touchdown. Reed only had one other reception on the night and Cousins completed 12 of 23 for 186 yards, 3 touchdowns and an interception. His other touchdowns went to wideouts, Ryan Grant and Pierre Garcon. Running back, Matt Jones, didn’t see the field but rookie, Rob Kelley, performed well in his absence with 12 carries for 51 yards.

Steelers vs. Saints

Pittsburgh’s performance this weekend leaves no questions about the potency of its offense outside the fact that they were playing against a weak Saints’ defense. Big Ben completed 12/17 for 148 yards and 2 touchdowns. Leveon bell averaged 7 yards per carry and had 5 receptions for 37 yards. Antonio brown had 4 catches for 87 yards and a touchdown. Even the defense looked alive, snagging two interceptions (though they were both from Graham Grayson).
For the Saints, Drew Brees had a short-lived, but expectedly efficient series completing 9 of 12 for 78 yards and a td. Mark Ingram, the Saints’ stud RB, was inefficient averaging just over 2 yards per carry on 7 attempts. However, Tim Hightower flourished by comparison with nearly twice the yardage on the same amount of attempts. Last years 2015 zero-to-hero wideout, Willie Snead, caught four for 58 yards and a touchdown while the projected number 1, Brandin Cooks only had one reception for 10 yards.
All in all, the Saints looked every bit as weak as they were in 2015 while the Steelers shined despite the absence of Martavis Bryant who will miss the entire 2016 season.
