NHL Predictions: March 16

The NHL season is entering it’s final push, as teams attempt to secure playoff position. Let’s see what’s on top for Friday, March 16.

Note that all standings are for games played through Monday, March 12.

New York Islanders versus Washington Capitals

In a match up of teams on the opposite sides of the standings, the Capitals are first in the Metropolitan and the Islanders are next to last. Washington holds a commanding +20 to +4 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator and “average down” versus “dead” on the Team Strength Oscillator. The teams have split the series so far, both winning as home favorites. That trend will continue with a home win for Washington in this one.

Dallas Stars versus Ottawa Senators

Ottawa is out of the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference, while the Stars are in the middle of the pack in the Central Division. The Senators won the first meeting between the teams by a 3-2 score as a road underdog. Dallas is +21 on the Power Ranking Indicator with an “average” status, while the Ottawa is 0 and “ice cold down”. They are also tenth in Team Volatility and as a home underdog, doesn’t bode well. Look for Dallas to even the season series.

Nashville Predators versus Colorado Avalanche

The Avalanche have been solid, going 5-1-4 over the last ten, but the Predators are on a roll, 9-0-1 in their last ten. Not surprisingly, the Predators hold a +30 to +14 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator. Furthermore, they are “burning hot” versus “average down” on the Team Strength Oscillator and have won the last three meetings. Colorado is 24-8-2 at home, but Nashville is tied for fifth in Team Volatility and will likely be a road favorite. Nashville should come away with a one or two goal win in this one.

San Jose Sharks versus Calgary Flames

Five points separate the Sharks and the Flames in the Pacific Division. San Jose has won the last two meetings and have a +23 to +17 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator. Neither team has been hot lately, both hovering around .500 over their last ten. This is noted by their “average” versus “average up” status on the Team Strength Oscillator. Calgary has been significantly better on the road than at home and the Sharks are above .500 on the road. Look for the Sharks to take their third straight from the Flames.

Detroit Red Wings versus Anaheim Ducks

Detroit is out of the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference, while the Ducks are battling for a final spot in the Western Conference. Detroit won the previous meeting between the two teams as a home underdog on February 13. However, they are only +3 versus +18 on the Power Ranking Indicator. Further demonstrating their futility, Detroit has lost their last seven and are “dead” on the Team Strength Oscillator. It’s very unlikely that Detroit will come away with a win in this one. A strong bet is the Ducks in this one.

Minnesota Wild versus Vegas Golden Knights

The Golden Knights come in second in the Western Conference, while the Wild are currently fourth.  Minnesota has the upper hand recently, winning the last two meetings. They have a slim +26 to +24 edge on the Power Ranking Indicator and “burning hot” status thanks to seven wins in the last ten games. Vegas has won their last three after a mediocre 3-3-1 record over their previous seven. Although the Wild have been playing quite well, Vegas is tough at home and the Wild are under .500 on the road. I see a single goal win for the Golden Knights.
