NHL picks: December 16

Edmonton Oilers versus Minnesota Wild

Edmonton is near the bottom in the Pacific Division while Minnesota is in the middle of the pack in the Central Division. However, both teams are playing relatively well lately, on an upward trend on the Power Ranking Indicator (Minnesota holding a +17 to +7 advantage). Edmonton won two of three last season between the teams, but the Wild are 9-3-2 at home. I see them winning this one without too much difficulty.

New York Rangers versus Boston Bruins

The Rangers are battling in the tight Metropolitan Division and the Bruins are third in the Atlantic Division. New York won the first meeting this season as a home favorite and are +17 and rising on the Power Ranking Indicator. The Bruins are +12 on the Power Ranking Indicator and are a solid 9-4-2 at home, compared to 4-6-0 road mark for the Rangers. I take the Bruins in this one in a tight game decided in the third period.

Dallas Stars versus Philadelphia Flyers

Dallas looks to shoot towards the top of the Central Division while the Flyers are trying to stay out of the basement in the Metropolitan. Philadelphia is +10 on the Power Ranking Indicator and the Stars are +12, both teams on the rise in that category. Both teams won at home in the series last season. Dallas is tied for 10th in Team Volatility and are sub-.500 on the road this season. Philadelphia has won four straight and I see their hot play continue in this one, earning a win.

Anaheim Ducks versus Washington Capitals

Washington has one of the best records in the NHL and it’s reflected on the oscillators. They are +26 on the Power Ranking Indicator and “burning hot” on the Team Strength Oscillator. Anaheim is going in the other direction, “ice cold down” and +9 and declining on the Power Ranking Indicator. The teams split the two meetings last season and I see Washington taking the first this season, rolling to an easy win.

Pittsburgh Penguins versus Arizona Coyotes

The Penguins are just 5-5 over the last ten games but face an Arizona team that is 7-21-5 for the season. They are -14.52 and “dead” on the Team Strength Oscillator and +1 on the Power Ranking Indicator, compared to +26 for the Penguins. Pittsburgh won two of the three meetings last season. Both teams rank high in Team Volatility, making this an even easier pick. Look for the Penguins to cruise to victory.

Nashville Predators versus Calgary Flames

Nashville is 7-1-2 over the last ten and are “burning hot” on the Team Strength Oscillator. One of the best records in the NHL, they are +26 on the Power Ranking Indicator. Calgary is sitting in the middle of the pack in the Pacific and are “ice cold down” on the Team Strength Oscillator. The Flames won as a road underdog on October 24, but I see the tides turning in this one. Nashville’s hot play should continue, giving them a road victory in this one.
