NBA Predictions: January 26

Philadelphia 76ers versus San Antonio Spurs

The 76ers come in “burning hot” on the Team Strength Oscillator despite blowing a big lead against the Grizzlies on Monday. The Spurs are “average down” and are just +14 on the Power Ranking Index compared to +28 for the 76ers. Philadelphia won the last meeting as a home favorite on January 3. The Spurs are likely the favorite at home and are tied for sixth in Team Volatility. Although I give the edge to the Spurs at home, it wouldn’t surprise me to see a Philadelphia upset, so would avoid betting on this one.

Indiana Pacers versus Cleveland Cavaliers

The teams are nearly identical on the Power Ranking Indicator with Indiana holding a slim +10 to +9 edge. Cleveland is currently “ice cold down”, while the Pacers are “average”. Indiana is also tied for fourth in Team Volatility and have won outright the last three meetings between the teams. Cleveland should be the favorite at home, but going with the hot hand and see the Pacers increasing their winning streak over the Cavs to four.

Utah Jazz versus Toronto Raptors

Toronto won the first meeting this season between the teams as a road underdog on November 3. They hold a +22 to +16 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator and are “burning hot” versus “average down” on the Team Strength Oscillator. There is nothing that leads me to believe the Jazz can win this one and the Raptors at home makes it more unlikely that the Jazz can pull off the upset. Toronto should win this one rather easily.

Houston Rockets versus New Orleans Pelicans

The teams are relatively close on the Power Ranking Indicator, with the Rockets holding a +26 to +22 advantage. However, Houston is “burning hot” while the Pelicans are “ice cold up”. Both teams are in the top ten in Team Volatility and Houston won the last meeting between the teams as a home favorite on December 11. I see Houston taking care of New Orleans and continuing their hot play.

Portland Trail Blazers versus Dallas Mavericks

Portland is “burning hot” and is reflected with their +27 ranking on the Power Ranking Indicator. They won the first meeting this season between the teams as a home favorite on January 20. Dallas has won only 16 games and is going nowhere, as their “ice cold down” status indicates. It’s hard to envision the Mavericks pulling this one out and will likely lose, maybe by double digits.

New York Knicks versus Phoenix Suns

Both teams are 3-7 over their last ten games and are both “ice cold down”. They are also even at +8 on the Power Ranking Indicator,. The Knicks won on November 3 in the first meeting this season between the teams. Phoenix should be a slight home favorite and the Knicks are tied for fourth in Team Volatility, leaning my pick towards the Suns.
