Each MLB team will start the 2018 season on Thursday March 29th. It will be the first time in five decades that MLB has scheduled all 30 teams to play on opening day.
In January, the first set of futures odds for the 2018 World Series were released. The New York Yankees led the odds at +500. Sportsbooks favored the Yankees thanks to the team’s acquisition of Giancarlo Stanton. The Yankees are still seen as one of the standout teams in MLB in 2018. However, New York is just one of the possible teams who could take the pennant and the World Series crown.
American League
The New York Yankees are currently +275 to win the American League pennant. The AL East team is seen as head and shoulders better than the rest of the division.
Central rivals the Cleveland Indians are at odds of +325. The Indians were one of the best teams in baseball a season ago. Thanks to the Indians great August and September, odds makers around the world predicted the team would win the World Series.
The Yankees and Indians aren’t the only elite team being tipped by sportsbooks. The World Champion Houston Astros are the third top team in the AL. The Astros haven’t made big changes to the side that won the World Series a season ago. The team has added a couple of good players that will only make the team strong. Houston is at the same odds as the Yankees to win the AL (+275). Houston has the pitching and the hitting; but do the Astros have the hunger?
National League
Despite the turnover on and off the field, the Los Angeles Dodgers have been placed as the odds favorite in the National League. The Dodgers are at odds of +225, but the favorite’s tag could solely be down to the team’s World Series appearance in 2017.
The NL East’s Washington Nationals have been picked as sportsbooks’ second favorite team. The Nationals are +350 to win the NL. Since moving to Washington, the Nationals have continued to prove they are a popular bet only to not come through.
The Chicago Cubs are the third standout team in the NL. The Cubs had an off season after winning the World Series in 2016. Chicago should be better in 2018 after a winter of moves.The Cubs should be much better this season, but so will the St. Louis Cardinals.
The baseball season starts in a few weeks’ time. The season is currently set to be the New York Yankees, but it looks likely another team will through a few wrenches in the works.
